It's been a while since I posted, been busy. I was able to give my HF el-cheap-o TIG a good workout. It's been working great, no headaches. I used the TIG on about 99% of the welds. Used the MIG to quickly tack the bungs & panels into place, but that's about it.this is the 2nd tank I've attemped to chop, so please understand that it is far from perfect, close to FUGLY. I know I need more practice (who doesn't?)Started out as a $20 e-gay special with some funky late 70's style paint. But that was little to be desired upon closer inspection, because it all chipped off with very little effort.first thing I did was relocate the petcock and add sight glass bungs:then relocate the filler neck (and obviously cover the original hole)Then cut the tunnel out and install a home-made low tunnel that I bent over a piece of 1-3/4 exhaust tubing.final order of business was to close it up and pressure test:There were so many EXISTING leaks on this tank that I almost ****. I pretty much had to weld over every existing weld on the tank, including the entire seam where the sides meet the bottom.
Reply:and mock ups on the bike. I just have to figure out the mounts and decide if I want to paint it or not:I pretty much learned how to TIG weld on this tank. Of course, I definately need all the practice I can get, I ain't that good still. But I got the hang of TIG quicker than I did my MIG. And with TIG, ya come out with less leaks...

Reply:Right on. It looks pretty good, and you already know you still have shaping and bondo work, so it is a cool project. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:That looks like a tough project.  I vote unpainted, it gives the bike a cool retro look.

Reply:do you have cross over tube?
Reply:What did you use to purge the tank before cutting / welding?I have a tank to work on myself, but am terrified of becoming a grease spot on the garage floor. My wife just keeps asking what my life insurance policy # is. I'm begging to think she doesn't care about me anymore.
