I had a piece I made powder coated prematurely. It needs some tweaking. I attempted to tweak/bend with leverage but It's gonna take some heat. How much heat can powder coating handle? I would experiment but do not have a scrap able piece. Reply:I think I smell a re-PC'ing. It will just burn off with the heat from a torch. It's pretty amazing how much it flexes with bent cold though!200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:If you need to heat a piece of steel in order to bend it, then the coating -will- be trashed.Powder coating can usually handle a few hundred degrees.Heating steel to red-hot to bend it means 1000F+.Which means the powder coating is trashed.Your call as to whether you can locally burn some of the powder coating, heat the steel, bend the steel, cool the steel, and then remove the damaged and scorched and scuffed/smushed/scratched powder coating and then recoat it. Or to strip the coating off, then bend the steel with heat as needed, and then have to part recoated completely. The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:my powder coating guy told me powder coating comes off "around 250-350F"
Reply:He's right OM, it starts coming off at about what it cures at and most powders cure at 280 to 420 degrees. My PC guy told me there is a high heat powder but it's expensive.
Reply:Today I've welded on some ~12ga metal that's been powdercoated (yard edging) - the powdercoat just burns off/lights on fire on the backside. I can't speak for a better powdercoat/item that's been coated though.Lincoln AC225 and CartLincoln WeldPak HD and CartOne hand
Reply:No need to strip the whole piece. Just heat the spot, bend, then wire cup or sand off the crispy bits, maybe feather the edges, and re-powder that spot.
