I was given a couple of large discs that I would like to turn into fire pits. I've built one in the past but it was made from a tank head. The tank head was light and easy to move...these discs are another story. I'm not good when it comes to angles and forget about coupling angles with rounded surfaces. Since these dics are extremely heavy I was hoping you guys could give some pointers on making the legs and getting them right the first time. I have to use the tractor to move these around so its not like the tank head pit where I flipped it back and forth making sure everything was even and straight. So...first priority is to get the legs on straight and equidistant so it doesn't rock around on the patio...next priority is aesthetics. If you guys have any ideas on making it look cool too I will try and make it happen if its not to complex.I have attached a couple of photos of the disc we're working with. It has some bumps on the bottom that seem symmetrical. Maybe use these as reference points to measure from?  Thanks - Garren Attached Images
Reply:have you thought about making an square box ( 1 inch square tubing) weld it to the bottom, then make small gussets to make sure it's steady. Then weld your legs to it.

Reply:Measure out 3 points from the center (or however many you want.Cut the legs the same size.Place a small tack for each leg approximately at the angle it needs to sit.Have 2 jigs.  Pieces of sheet steel cut in shape similar to a speed square.  One for setting one direction, one for the other.  Tack to workpiece, set leg, tack to leg.  Then weld leg.  You probably want to brace with some pieces like that as well.  Just keep it consistent.  If you are off 1/2" at the end of your legs, big deal, shouldn't matter on a project like this.  Nobody will notice, just cut the legs down afterwards to level it off, and you'll be good to go!Good luck!
Reply:Thanks everyone. Using all three suggestion, this may not be as bad as I expected. I think I have a plan now....but not the rim idea... I had seriously thought about the truck rim when I first got these. It would be quick and easy...but not quite the look I'm going for. Reply:Three leg is a great idea.  I would make my frame first to whatever footprint you are looking for, level the frame out and then set it on top and slide it around until it's level to the ground.. I don't think anyone will notice if you are off by a fraction of an inch.I guess that all depends on how high you are going to make it.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:I ended up getting a round stand of some sort from my neighbor. I cut out the center and put in a piece of scrap pipe to set the disc on. Almost as simple as a truck rim but looks a little better.I still have another disc to turn into a firepit and since I'm out of neighbors with scrap round stands it looks like I'm still gonna have to learn to put legs on these. Reply:If it were me I would have turned the big heavy piece upside down and placed the base on top....I assume that was the position desired for welding anyways
Reply:It looks pretty cool.   I think the wheel below compliments the disc teeth.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:I went with a buddy to San Felipe, Baja on a fishing trip. We brought our fish back and cooked them on a 'disc'. That was 4 years ago, but I seem to remember the fire being under the disc and cooking on bare, cured steel. Anytime I get to eat fresh fish cooked outdoors, I'm a happy camper! Reply:can you get those bolts out? or make holes that match them?Cut 4 rods the same diameter as the hole, make them whatever length you want the table height.  make a matching base however you want.  Then put the rods in and give it a twist.  It gives it a cool look, we acually just make a table alot like this one using the drive sproket from a trachoe as the base.Have we all gone mad?
