Any ideas on locating a low volume oil pump?Bought a new HF band saw last week - put it together this weekend - for $150 I was supprised how well made it is - Tiwain made, seems to be the same one Grizzly sells for $100 more. Cuts great.  The one thing its lacking is an oil bath feed.  Would like to add it but don't know where to buy the oil pump.  Looked in all my catalodges - nada - only water or gas pumps and they look to high volume or maybe not able to pump oil.  Maybe a water pump - oil being heaver it would slow down the volume? Has anyone tried this? To hard on pump? Ideas?Anyone know where I can locate a low volume oil pump?Thank for any guidence.
Reply:May have problems retaining the blade with oil.  Why not use water-based coolant?  In cali you have no freeze issues, I would think.  Much cleaner, safer this way.Besides, I run mine dry with no problems.  My bimetal blade is over a year old and still kicking.  How much stock are you cutting?  When I run a lot of SS, I do add an air jet.us
Reply:Take a can of WD-40 and spray it on as you are cutting something. The blade will probably slip off the wheel. I have a larger saw that doesn't do that. A small submersable pump and a soluable oil/water mix would work but is messy. I don't bother anymore.
Reply:This link will take you to more information on such saws than you'll need, and save me a lot of typing.http://www.frugalmachinist.com/bandsaw.htmlAppreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:Unless your doing "production" work, and runing constantly. Coolant is more trouble than its worth. Using the proper speeds and feed will be all you need. Watch how it produces chips. 90% of the time I leave mine set on the middle pulley (120FPM)I've cut a lot of stock with mine. My concerns were the "Heavy duty" stand, and the gearbox. A good first project would be a better stand.I would also change the oil in the gearbox. When I checked mine there was a lot of metallic particles in the oil. Use any agma 5 gear oil. When I built my stand I built it taller so I wouldn't keep bending over, and it matches a support stand I have. Attached Images
Reply:I would go with a water based coolant as suggested and not oil. Buy good blades and you will cut anything, if you ever plan to cut any stainless steel make sure to buy  ablade to cut it M-42 comes to mind cost about 35.00 cuts foreverJ P Streets Welding LLC
Reply:Thanks for the great responce - how did I get this far in life without youall!Looks like I'll just do without the oil/water bath - do not do any production, I'll just be doing weekend stuff with this.  First thing is to get a couple of bi-metal blades and  replace oil in gear box.First project is to build stand!  This thing is made for little tiny people - had to get down on my knees to work it.Brings to mind - what tooth blade should I get? Will be doing mostly mild steel.  Seem to remember a thread with chart for different tooth count for different metals but can't find it - probably on that 'other' site.P.S., Palomar Mountain where I live is in Southern California - but is in the backcountry at 6,000 feet - it does freeze here. Couldn't stand the city any more - to many strange people.
Reply:Mtn;Blade pitch is determined by what you cut. You should have about three teeth cutting at one time. I cut mostly 1/4" qnd 3/16" wall tube with some heavier stuff thrown in. I just started brazing my own blades. (see previous post) I compromised and bought a 100' roll of 14 TPI Starrett blade stock. How far from the observatory do you live. Back in the sixties I went on a tour of the facility.
Reply:I live on the south west edge - the observatory is about 6 miles away on the north side.  My family has been going up to Palomar since the 20's.  In 1946 I had lunch with my mother and aunt on the hill next to the road coming up th hill and watched the 200" lense for the telescope come up the hill.  My uncle was a forest ranger at the time.  When it came time to leave the city - it was a natural - rural, small population, isolated, fortifiable, etc. - when the commies come. . . . .
Reply:fla jim,By the way - how far are you from Venice?  The best welder I know, and a dear friend lives there.  If you have to live in Flordia, the west coast is it - was there about 10 years ago with him - worked at gun club - a bit different than California!
Reply:I'm about sixty miles north, accross the Skyway bridge in Seminole Fl.I go shooting sometimes at Knights trail park outside of venice.
Reply:Jim, I see that you have a mill/drill. So do I, an RF-30. Do you happen to know where to go for spare parts?
Reply:depending on what you need. I'd check with Grizzly
Reply:I need the cross feed nut. The lead screw was rough, a common problem. Check yours. I will check with Grizzly, thanks.
