Reply:OK, I have to ask... Why is it that everyone seems to be running mig beads that look like tig? Is it on purpose, for looks, or just done naturally? I do have to say, that those are some awesome looking welds. I hope that I am not offending you here, as it's not my intent, as you could probably weld circles around me, but in my own mind, I'm thinking, that when you are running a mig, or a tig for that matter, that the closer that you stack the dimes together, the better the weld integrity. I'm not saying that better integrity is needed with those welds to perform their job, but as far as welding theory goes, wouldn't the closer stacked dimes be stonger? Thanks for sharing, and I'm sorry to kinda take this in another direction, but I've just got to get a concensus on it if possible.
Reply:thanks and it just a weave i was just putting the cover pass on the way i always doi was not trying to stack any thing but being that i have to weld in short circuit and not spray i have to weave it like that to get it to lay falter andnot be to convex and need to be ground down ChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:dad, it could be for three reasons. One is for cosmetic reasons, one is for physical reasons, one is the way the welder welds.Sometimes on publically visible welds the customer/boss wants them to look a certain way to appeal to the public or they don't want a bulky weld sticking out under a paintjob.  I personally like a smooth weld, but different strokes for different folks.Sometimes a big bulky weld gets in the way of fitting pieces of steel together.  Making the weld flatter by manipulating the puddle and spreading it out can make this happen and often can give a stack of dimes look.Or the welder makes a weave or circling pattern that gives that appearance.
Reply:Looks nice Chopper. Good job. It might be possible to tune out spatter to some degree, but I have seen very little of that happen in the three years that I have been using mig in the short circuit transfer mode. I need to take a picture of my fiber-metal hood after lots of overhead welding.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:Looks great.  Also looks like you went UP, A+ on that one.My beads look likeyours because that is the way I weld.  More heat + more motion of the mig gun = more stronger weld.  I just can't hold the Mig gun steady, so I make circles, Us or Zs.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Chopper, welderboy, Thanks for some answers. Once again VERY, Very nice chopper! I would love to see what you can do with a smooth running mig!
Reply:that as good as it gets for me in short circuit a Little better in sprayChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:Nice looking welds!  Do you have to bevel the edge of the 3/8" plate where it meets the leg of the angle iron? Do you weld them in more than one pass ?Those pieces are incredibly strong with that plate formed into a hat section. I form hats and use them for stiffeners quite often...Do you weld it all flat?...looks like a little vertical down for a couple of inches.

Reply:The codes that you are welding to may not call the mode of transfer an essential variable.  Do you know for sure?

Reply:believe me I'm trying to get them to change ,but the owner has i friend of hisworking there (lets just call him A-hole) A-hole can weld some but he is not a welder he thinks he is ,his "motto is we have always done it like this" or "we have never do it like that so why start now"you see A-hole thinks that there is only one process that works and only one form of that process.example he  thinks that you have to weld in short circuit or you will warp your parts . i have welded none code parts in spray he had a sh!t fitbecause the parts were going to be warped . been there 3 years and noneof my stuff goes to the straightener most of his stainless covers have to be sent out and he welds in short circuit only i tig or spray all the stainless i doand none of mine need to be sent out even though A-hole says I'm welding to hot,(oh and the stainless is 3/8 -1" and A-hole still short circuit welds)ChuckASME Pressure Vessel welderOriginally Posted by chopper5believe me I'm trying to get them to change ,but the owner has i friend of hisworking there (lets just call him A-hole) A-hole can weld some but he is not a welder he thinks he is ,his "motto is we have always done it like this" or "we have never do it like that so why start now"
Reply:no pre heat im not worried that his stuff will go boom its all low pressuer100 psi max most of the time its run at 10-20 pisChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:I feel for the situation your in chopper. Where I work, I don't have to deal with that bull****...families and friends not allowed...no exceptions. A guy might get his kid into the trade and we'll take him on for the first little bit, but he always gets layed off after he's got a start. It's not healthy for a work place that harbors favoritism

Reply:Very good stuff there Chopper...A-hole says spray will warp the parts.....well thats a topic right there   Very nice welds      3/8" w/ spray? If you all changed the WPS I would guess you would have to eliminate verticle ?   right ? just wondering weld it like you own it
Reply:In my opinion, because of the shape of those covers and the fact they are made from MS...I don't think warpage would be much of a concern, regardless of the amount of heat you put into them.
Reply:well its not so much the heat as  the way you go a bout itanyway it don't relay matter any more to day A-hole was the job of production manager   so I'm looking for a new jobso is our machinist and our gofer i gues its not what you know but how well you fit under the bosses deskthanks for the replysChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
