I want to repair a broken spring on a retractable hydraulic jack.  The part that is broken is the end semi-circular ring portion that attaches through a hole in a frame member, and I want to reweld the half-semicircular part to the spring body.  The break is in the semi-circular half and easily accessible without the weld touching the spring body portion.  The material diameter (spring wire) is 1/8 to 3/16 inch.  I thought that I should first heat to red, the ends that I want to join, and let air dry to anneal, then weld with OA.  I could maybe weld with MIG but can better control the weld with OA.Any suggestions?  Am thinking that if the weld would not be dependable since it was spring material, would joint just to have a backup spring.  Or should I just toss it and buy new.  I have several new springs to use so timing is not an issue.  I have several springs of the same type that are broken in the middle of the spring body and but not attempt to weld those. Thanks,Chris
Reply:Well hello, I can tell you I temper wire for spring making at A.S.W. the let me tell you that there are many kinds of spring wire......I.E. silicone, chrome vanadium and a hole lot of otheres....and at what percent of each.......I have welded some scrap for work and can tell you it's a crap shoot as to if its going to hold. Your best bet if doable is to re-bend a ring if you can.......To re temper you have to heat to Cherry red (1700 -1800 f) Oil quench, and then reheat to 800-1000 and water quench.........the temp of the reheat is what gives you the tensel...............now my 2 cents........there cheap buy a new one..........Red.Lincoln Percision tig 225 (Water cooled)Lincoln 350MP Power mig (with spool gun )Lincoln GXT 250 With Tig  ModuleLincoln Ln-25 Pro Dual PowerCentury 50 plasma cutter.now Lincoln .
Reply:Buy a new one.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:Have no idea what the material is so agree the best answer would be to not depend on it and go new.  Have two spares so will just pitch the broken one (after giving it a try just to see what happens).  Must give it a try at least in case I ever have the need and new is not available.  Thanks for help....never tried fixing springs before...and probably will not this time either.
Reply:If this is just a standard coil spring and the end loop is broken, forming a new loop shouldn't be hard. Heat just the area where you need to bend it to a dull red, just enough so that it will bend with a bit of effort, and after bending, let it cool slowly. That way, the worst that can happen is that it will be too soft there and deform under load.  If you do find the bend area is too soft, on the second try at reforming the same loop, then you can oil quench to get it a bit harder.Since the spring will be just a bit shorter than originally, the load at full extension will be a bit greater, but even so, it should last a while. This is a good leaning experience even if it doesn't last too long, but if done right, it should.
