Reply:That sounds like a rich man's solution.  I do more tree work than metal work, but I find that keeping my gear in bags that I get from goodwill and garage sales works great.  You can find suit cases and canvas, leather, nylon backpacks and tote bags for cheap.I hear what you say - memory about what is where is a pain.  I seem to always forget stuff if it isn't kept in the same place.I transfer a few containers from the truck when I need them.  My safety gear and tool bags used to work on my saws get moved in dedicated containers.  As long as I have the 5 or 6 bags with me I know that everything I need is there.Until a long lost uncle dies and leaves me with money I expect to keep handling my tools that way.  Dedicated bags, keep them with me where the work is.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year

Reply:If I organized anything I would never find anything......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I keep everything I need on the truck at all times, except the ac tig, which I use in both places.  The idea of having the truck fully outfitted is I don't need to grab anything to go do a job.  Everything's already right there, put away in exactly the same spot, every time, so I can easily find it.  If I want to know if I'm running low on wire, grinding wheels, bits, blades, etc, I just go look in the usual spots I keep them and see what's there.  Makes life very easy and work goes much smoother when you don't realize in the middle of a job that the thing you need is back at the shop cause you forgot to grab it before you left.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I have at least two of every thing. There is no way I could pull it off to load for each job from the shop as I just do too many different types of work.
Reply:I have everything I need on each truck and in the shop. Sounds "rich" but it took time.
Reply:I would imagine the majority of guys that do this day in and day out for a living use their truck as their tool box. So no need to double buy everything. Sorta like I use my boat as my tackle box. I ended up selling most of my tackle bags once I got the boat. This way I have what I need, when I need it."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:I keep a lot of stuff on the truck but i cant keep everything.    I have to make a mental list before i leave in the morning for a job and hope i brought everything.  Luckily i can send a guy up from the shop in a pinch so it works OK.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Paint - Blast a mess of spray bomb all over your brand-new shiny tools. For example, tool color  red   belongs in truck/kit/gang-box/building/machine/whatever  red .When tools are borrowed, or when several  tool colors work together on a project, at clean-up time it's easy to find their correct homes.Even after heavy use, enough of the paint stays around to make ID by color easy.Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 09-25-2010 at 10:38 PM.
Reply:The truck isn't a moving tool box but a moving shop and office.

Reply:At our shop we have always had just the basics in our mobile shop rig... then if we needed anything extra/specialty stuff we would just bring it along.  When somebody called us out on the road we would get a rough desctiption of the job and try to bring along the approiate tools/equipment.This can come to bite you in the a$$.  forgeting something and not having the right tools for the job gets really old after a while.  We also have multiple guys using the same rig and forgetting to put back tools/equip and that always ticked me off.So finally last year i built my own, brand new, personal welding rig.  I have everything under the sun on my rig, for pretty much any type of welding job I can encounter and i dont let ANYONE else use it.I know where everything is at all times and have every tool I need for any job.... it makes live soooooo much easier and i should have done it a long time ago.Id say, save up and outfit the shop and you mobile rig with everything you need.... it may take some time (as it did with me)  but it was WELL WORTH IT and i wouldnt have it any other way.Steve1946 Shorthood  -  1958 Blackface  -  1962 Redface  -  1967 Redface  -  1968 Redface -  1970 Blackface  -  2005 300D -  2008 Vantage 300  -and a ton of other welding stuff
