Hey all. Found this site today and have been browsing through pages and pages of great knowledge. Here is a project I started last weekend.I've never welded in my life prior to last weekend. I've been practicing alot. Just bought a used lincoln 225 thunderbolt. I'll let the pics do the talkin.http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...79_71_full.jpghttp://memimage.cardomain.net/member...79_72_full.jpghttp://memimage.cardomain.net/member...79_76_full.jpghttp://memimage.cardomain.net/member...79_77_full.jpghttp://memimage.cardomain.net/member...79_78_full.jpghttp://memimage.cardomain.net/member...79_79_full.jpghttp://memimage.cardomain.net/member...79_80_full.jpghttp://memimage.cardomain.net/member...79_81_full.jpghttp://memimage.cardomain.net/member...79_82_full.jpgLast edited by Stickbug; 12-23-2006 at 12:42 AM.
Reply:I will be building sides and top rails out of 1 1/2" angle, possibly 2x6 decking or 3/4" plywood (not sure yet), rebuild the bearings, adding 12 rims with larger tires and I would like to add 1ft to the tongue. Any suggestions for a newb and his first fab project??
Reply:clean that steel before you start welding it! What welder will you be using?Verticle rails at an "L" to the side members or "V"? I did mine as a "V" and I liked it.***************************************Lincoln AC225 stick welderLincoln HD100 WeldPak flux core wire feed welderThree of the cheapest grinders money can buy
Reply:That was an old tent trailer?? You've got your work cut out there .If you want to extend the tongue, I'd blow the old one off and and build a new one that extends back under the frame work. Those are easier to make if you aren't comfortable with your skill level.Show us more pics of the progress.

Reply:Here is what got done todayhttp://memimage.cardomain.net/member...79_83_full.jpghttp://memimage.cardomain.net/member...79_84_full.jpghttp://memimage.cardomain.net/member...79_85_full.jpgNext is to hunt down some rims/ tires and fenders, and rebuild the bearings. I need the fenders before I can add the verticle support on the sides since I'm not sure yet where the fenders will mount. Also need to start with the dreaded frame prep for paint. What is the best way to remove the rusty chit from inside the c-channel??
Reply:If you don't need the height, the axle might do better (provide better stability) if it's on top of the springs.Looks good.I would try to powerwash the inside of the c-channel, then sandblast?Just fab up a fender mount that has two attachment points on the underside of that c-channel close to the tires.Make your own fenders outta diamond plate so you can stand on them Flat tops, cut notches in the corners, bend the sides and front/back down like dogears, weld the seams.***************************************Lincoln AC225 stick welderLincoln HD100 WeldPak flux core wire feed welderThree of the cheapest grinders money can buy
Reply:check out the trailer I built maybe you can get some ideas.http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=6724

Reply:Looks like your tongue is plenty long. Anything over 45 inches is fine.Bill
Reply:That's what the old lady says to.
Reply:I set myself up for that. I suppose it could have been worse.Bill
Reply:depends on what the checkerplate is.... if it's aluminum then alum stuff, if it's stainless then stainless stuff, and if it's chromed, ..... then grind it off I know this reponse is highly technical (not!)... maybe someone with alum & stainless experience will give a better answer ***************************************Lincoln AC225 stick welderLincoln HD100 WeldPak flux core wire feed welderThree of the cheapest grinders money can buy

Reply:Zap I agreee. I only have $170 into this trailer so far and the idea is to build this as cheap as possible. I plan on buying the cheaper fenders. I like the angled ones better. I dunno we'll see I guess when I head out to get them. I'll end up buying the 12" rims and tires along with the fenders as well as rebuild the bearings all at the same time. Then I'll know once I have the fenders where to mount the last verticle angle on each side. After that it'll be time to wood it up.

Here it is completed. Now I need another project. Metal work is addicting. Maybe I will have to put out a search on a project trail rig...hmmmm we'll have to see what the future holds.
Reply:Looks great! Coat that plywood with epoxy next time before painting it and it will fill in the grain and make it waterproof longer.Next project? ....***************************************Lincoln AC225 stick welderLincoln HD100 WeldPak flux core wire feed welderThree of the cheapest grinders money can buy
Reply:Now ya gotta make some bows to go over the trailer so the tarp doesn't fall in from rain or snow.

Reply:nice ,, how much will it haul ?? weight
Reply:that was a nice job and I'll bet all your prodjects come out that way just by looking at your shop!
Reply:Dunno the weight restriction but Ima guessing around 1200-1400lbs?? It was an old tent trailer frame so that is my guess. I have had it loaded to the top full with wet firewood so if that is any indication. |
