Lots of nice tables here - have stolen many ideas - Thanks. I've made a small inside table with adjustable legs for sitting or standing/layout - 28" to 38" so height is not a problem. I'm about to make a really heavy duty outside welding, cutting, layout table. Question: What height do I make it? You'all with lots of experance, what have you found to be a good height over the long haul? I'm 5'11" tall. I'm making it really heavy, and once together don't want to have to shorten it 2" or raise it 2". Thanks for any help
Reply:my work bench sits at 39", and I'm 6'5".
Reply:I'm 5' 10" and I usually go around 34" to 36" or so. I like to be able to reach at least half way across the table.Last edited by Jerry; 02-18-2004 at 07:26 PM.J P Streets Welding LLC

"Sorta seems like the most logical thing to do would be adjust the one you have and find the most comfortable working height. After that, build the new one to that height.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:I just went out to the shop and stood next to my table. Standing in a relaxed position (not at attention) the top of the table is even with the wrist joint of my hand. Works well for me but you may want a different height. Actually table height is 32". For the record I'm 5' 6 13/16".Last edited by Main; 02-18-2004 at 09:09 PM.
Reply:IF you will being doing work on the table that needs alot of muscle, than closer to the'little' brain would work best.IF you will being doing work that needs more finesse , than closer to the 'big' brain works better.Same general theory applies to vice height mounting. Reply:If you will be mostly standing, I would make it high enough so you don't have to bend your back.

I'm making the larger heavy table for layout and heavy fabracation - I don't have a lot of experence and the one I've used in the past is not available to me now (I didn't think to measure it at the time). I've caculated the weight of my new table (using the caculator at the top) and it should be over 1500 lbs. Thanks,Really enjoy the site - my wife is starting to make nosies about neglect - spending too much time at night going through old treads - lots of great info out there - hopefully will cut down on the amount of dumb things I end up doing! - Thanks All
Reply:I like tall tables. After working in kitchens all 7 yrs. of college, my back ached from bending over. Now I build all work tables at 36"-40". I'm 6' tall and like a table that is over waist height so as not to stress my lower back. So far, so good with the taller tables. |
