I'm in the process of getting certified as a combination welder and was thinking bout going to the comercial diving academy in fl to get certified in underwater welding. Do yall think it is worth the risk of your life to make the money that underwater welders make? What are yalls opinons on underwater welding? Any advice from a underwater welder would help. thanks
Reply:Dont worry about it. Learn to weld. Most will tell you that anything that can be welded topside will be and that most everything happening under water will be bolt up.UA Local 598
Reply:Honestly you will do very little welding underwater as a commecial diver. IT's very expensive for them to do things that way, and you don't get as good a joint. The only reason the weld under water is if there is no other option. Most stuff is welded topside and bolted together underwater. If you want to be welder, be a welder. If you want to dive and build things, become a commecial diver. Note that there are very few old commercial divers doing those "big money" jobs. The work takes a great toll on your body. Most move into supervisory positions or move to other lighter dive work like pier and bridge inspections, hull inspections, small boat recovery, sewer inspections and so on.I've worked for a commercial dive company doing those "lighter" jobs and it's still not easy on the body at 40. It's cold, dark and you can't see squat. There's been any number of threads on this in the past. Do an advanced search, type in commercial diving or underwater welding and use my User name "DSW" and a bunch of threads will pop up.Good luck..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:The industrial tradesman magazine has an article on this very topic this month. It says overall it's not very lucrative, andthe risks outweigh the rewards.  Not glamorous - imagine diving into a septic or oil tank.....
