does anybody have any good advice as how to put a root in a 2" pipe, open butt, one inch off the floor?
Reply:Carefully!Someone had to start it off...  In any case, I would have the bottom mostly square cut and put all the bevel, (more than normal) on the riser pipe. If your tight to a corner or wall you've got twice the challenge. If you have  a soft leather (hangman style) hood with a flip-up, it will make it a bit easier.Just my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
Reply:I understand Boilermakers do this all the time with Tig welding process. Tack up with an 1/8 inch + gap, use 3/32 inch filler, stick the filler through the pipe from the top, torch on the bottom of the pipe. This technique is called “shooting the gap”. Note: I've tried this, not fun at all!  Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:dave powelson sorry to have lead you to believe I've done any welding in such tight conditions. I should have been more clear, I've tried this technique in the 6-G position with a 250-amp water cooled torch. Torches than can do this kind of work are out there. Just because you or I haven't seen it, doesn't mean its not true.http://www.tectorch.com/micro%20tig%20torch.htmDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:cutout the top and make the weld from the inside..
Reply:Bend your tungsten.
Reply:Beat the pipefitter with a big stick and then tell him to weld it while you sit in the bar with a cold pint of stella If you happen the be both the pipefitter and the welder then probably not such a good idea to go the big stick route, maybe better to (along with the good advice you've aleady got from the last 3 posters) either jack the pipe up away from the floor if it'll flex enough to give you a couple of inches more clearance, or cut the section out in 2 places where you can weld it easily, make the said weld at the bench, then put it back and weld up the rest.Hope this helps!
Reply:hi, i try to avoid a weld like that. I would use a pair of slip on flanges where you can look right at it and bolt together if possible.it depends on situation. This works great when being able to prefab and tie into a existing line instead of butt weld. bob
Reply:cut out the section..do the weld..then weld the section back in where its easier to get to...3 weld instead of one but 3 good ones instead of 1 maybe not so good one
Reply:this kinda welding is way over my head but I have heard welders that work in boilers who have made repairs like Weldbead said on pipe that was right up against the wall. Only way to weld it was inside the pipe.
Reply:Window Weld, I was thinking, it was mentioned above, cut a section out, weld the inside, section back on, and weld it up. I, have never done this, I have seen it, its ugly, but it worked.Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120
Reply:http://www.lokring.com/products.aspx...7-b9c2123bbf88this fitting will work right on the floor, and beats anything but orbital welding for integrity, and I've used them to solve 'impossible' welds- like 1" off the floor. Can't hurt to look into these fittings to see if they would work?Cheers,Kevin Morin
Reply:as a boilermaker I've done this type of weld numerous times over my career. weldcraft makes a tig tortch with a real small head, about a inch long including the cup. you have to lower your argon flow to about 10-12 lbs. purge if you have room. feed the wire from the top sometimes is easier or bend the wire and run just a little backwards (going away from you) this will give you a starting tack. if you don't feel you want to do this then you're safest bet is a window weld. depending on the tech. for procedures you can weld the inside (mild steel) with tig w/7018 cap, 5p, or 7018 open root. I've made plenty of windows for x-ray.    revpol
Reply:What is going to be inside the pipe steam, Hot water, High temp hot water, oil, gas? Is it a steel pipe sch pipe ?1st thing if it steel I would get a socket weld coulping get some 6010 5 P+ 3/32" and set up a test run nothing like blowing a hold it the back of a pipe that you cant see "been there done that" take your time a  get comfortable and as my partner in work always says "Weld the ---- Thing" I aways carry in my mask bag a mag light and a Inspection mirror they are you frineds.
Reply:Weld bead is right do a window weld that's the easiest way to do it we do the welds that way when they are up against the wall in the boilers and we dont have access to the back side .look it up im sure they can give you a pictorial on line somewhere. After the arc has died the weld remains

Reply:Wear earplugs!Socket weld coulping if you can access both sides of the pipe sould be easy enough. 6011 3/32 rod would be my choice of rod. Good Luck
Reply:Weldbead is all over it!!!
