I am welding up Clay Target (Traps) gear box parts. This is the release system on the old Winchester Skeet trap. The material is cast steel and welds very well. In the past I just build up and mill the ends back to spec. They have lasted 6 - 8 years before they wear out and stop holding the arm cocked. Recently I have add two sets wear out in 8 months, so I decided to ask the experts!!!My question is, should I grind under the worn area and then build back up?? Or just blast, clean and build up?Thanks in advance.JimLast edited by David R; 11-24-2007 at 01:32 PM.Reason: fixed pics
Reply:I'd try some 309 stainless..Much tougher material than 70-S..No special prep needed..Give that a try.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:You could use hardface if they can be trimmed with a grinder. Prolly couldn't be machined. Hardface rod is available at Tractor supply or of course LWS.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:You need something hard, abrasion resistant and it needs to be polished as the final step. Grind it down so you can get some heat into it and impurities out.
Reply:Welding that junk up should keep you busy. We fought Winchester traps and a lack of parts for years. Finally, we scrapped em and went to Mattarelli.
