that I was working on for my "girl's bike"I posted a while back when I was int he middle of the project, but I finally finished it.http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread...light=gas+tankhere are finish pics. One of the biggest headaches was actually figuring out the mounts. I wound up utilizing the stock frame mounts on the rear of the tank, just repositioned. I TIG'ed the outside and MIG-ed the inside beads. Was easier to just shoot the metal on the inside, was awkeard to use the TIG in there. The front mount, I wound up using some scrap steel, cut out a shape, bent it & welded on a single mount to the top of the frame's backbone.. I also added a silly looking gusset tot he front of the tank just to fill in some space. I know it isn't a "true" gusset in this pic, but since the pic was taken, I have fully welded it in and is now connected to the horizontal piece. So please, no comments like "that isn't a gusset, it's a stupid piece of festoonery...cut it off..."I pressure tested the tank to about 8 psi, made sure all my welds were sound. I sent it to a buddy of mine ion Ohio for some paint. Going to do gloss black with heavy gold flace classic scallops over that.Last edited by eastcoasteddie; 11-24-2007 at 12:40 PM.
Reply:I also drilled a hole in the frame tube and welded in a threaded bung, which I drilled & tapped from a piece of 5/8" round stock:Pics of it mounted to the bike:
Reply:Super cool man!  Some nice detail there, and the welds look A-ok!  I also like the bike, classy!Have a Jeep Cherokee?  Click Here!
Reply:I did it all with my el-cheap-o Harbour Freight TIG. Even though it doesn't have a foot pedal, it still can do some pretty good welding. Just have to get used to it and what settings to use. I used a 1/16" Lanthanated tungsten, but I feel that maybe I should have used a .040" tungsten. Reason is that I had trouble striking an arc below the welder's #3 setting, and the 1/16" tung is good down to 50 amps. the .040" tung is good from 15-50 amps. The welder can put out 5-130 amps in TIG mode. Settings are 1-10 on the dial. if the dial setting vs amperage output is linear, then that would make it 12.5 amps per number on the dial (125 amp range). #3 setting would be 37.5 amps...kind of close but then again this is a Harbour freight  unit, perhaps it isn't THAT accurate...I'll try the smaller tung next time I weld and see what happens.here are some pics of the bike while I was fooling with low-light photography in the garage, using candle light and a drop light, and a combination of the 2.
Reply:oh, and here is another "easier" project I did, made a Jockey shifter/foot clutch setup.the hardest part of it all was the clutch cable support bracket. Wound up cutting a piece of angle steel and welded a 9mm/1/4" drive socket to it, which fits the cable perfectly. I contacted a "custom parts manufacturer" about making me a bracket...he wanted to charge me $180 and 4 weeks turnaround. Thanks, but no thanks...Last edited by eastcoasteddie; 11-24-2007 at 12:29 PM.
Reply:close-ups of the handle/pivotthe pivot is a bronze-bushed steel sleeve. I added a grease fitting and welded the hadle to it. I drilled into the sleeve about 1/8" and inserted the handle into it before welding, for more strength.the knob was a basic solid brass doorknob I found on a jobsite. Heated it to cherry and gave it a million taps with a ball peen for the finish.Last edited by eastcoasteddie; 11-24-2007 at 12:38 PM.
