In preparation for some planned off-road trips this year in my Jeep Cherokee, I'd like to cut out the rusted rocker panels and weld 3x6 3/16" box steel at the sheetmetal door jamb and behind at the pinch seam. Conceptually, I've walked through doing this 1,000 times in my mind. Ahhh, but the practical application is where the rubber hits the road....or the electrode hits the metal, as it were. Here's what I have to work with: - One Cherokee with 14 years of road salt cancer in the rockers - One Lincoln AC225 (AC-only), a.k.a. "The Tombstone" - One Eastwood Stitch Welder - Two classes of Adult Ed welding experienceI'll be picking up the box steel shortly, cutting it on the bandsaw (mitre the ends to follow the body line) and getting all set and ready to weld. So, here's my questions - - I know my welder isn't optimal for this kind of work, but it's what I have and I'd rather not buy a MIG at this time. Anyone give me pointers on recommended amps, electrode size, etc. (with or without the stitch attachment)? - Anyone have experience using a stitch welder? I don't expect MIG levels of perfection, but am hoping this might make sheetmetal-with-stick work a bit easier (if not, I got it used for cheap so my feelings won't be hurt).- Recommendations on electrode selection? I'm comfortable with 6013 and 7018 on AC (although I'll confess to a 6013 preference). - I know I need to focus the heat on the box steel and whip into the sheet metal at intervals (to try and keep from blowing through the sheetmetal). Any other tips from 'old-skool' sheetmetal stick welders?I know these are pretty specific questions using a sub-optimal welding process but any thoughts/advice/help would be greatly appreciated. Yes, I *could* rent/borrow a MIG (or even justify buying one), but I like a challenge......or I'm a glutton for punishment, one or the other! Thanks! Jason
Reply:I tried that Eastwood thing years ago and gave it to a friend. He hasn't called me in a long time. I would rent a mig.
Reply:Go to www.naxja.org and do a serch on raoker panels. You'll get plenty of hits. There was one post recently where the guy took pictures of the ones he built from start to finish.

Reply:Thanks guys - I went back through all the MADXJ articles, Billavista's, and also searched on NAXJA (looks like there's a few new ones up there).I think all the folks I've seen do this have used a MIG machine. I can rent a SP135 for a week for $80 (or I can buy a crappy Harbor Fruit 100A wire-feed for $100), but I have the AC225 and that stitch thingee.Someone, somewhere, at some time must've used a stick welder to do sheetmetal. Thanks for the info and keep it comin'....Jason
Reply:if this is one of your hobbies i would suggest a 110v mig welder purchase, it is a great investment and you will be more then happy with the results !!brian |
