I have a no 10 eye shade protector, but find it a little on the dark side and cannot see the puddle to weld. can i use a lower eye shade say a no 9 or is 10 the lowest for Mig Welding. Thanks in advance. Alf
Reply:AlfYou didn't fill out your profile, so I don't know how old you are.I'm on the high side of 50. I use a #9 shade with magnum cheaters for mig.Young eyes should be able to use #10. Mig is harder because your looking around the Nozzle. It just takes pratice, pratice, pratice.
Reply:Alf, What process are you using..023 MIG welding puts out less light than say .045 Dual shield or 5/32 stick so you have to adjust for this also.
Reply:I use a number 8 for mig.  Its plenty.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:What you might want to use is a #10 gold shield lense, they seem to let in more light and are easier to see what is going on. PS Welcome to the forum!
Reply:I use a number 12 gold sheild for everything, MIG and Stick
Reply:I've welded all my sticks and MIGs with my Jackson autodarkening helmet set on shade 9.  Never moved it.  Nice thing about this helmet is that it is shade 14 to UV all the time, no matter what the visible light setting is at, or even when it is off.
Reply:I would also recomend a gold lense. When I dont use my auto dark I like the gold, I feel im able to see better than with green.no you cant fix it with a hot pass.BORN TO LOSE, LIVE TO WIN.
Reply:I purchased a #10 gold lens this past weekend and tried it out yesterday, it worked great. Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
