After years of self-taught MIG welding, I finally enrolled in Arc-Welding 101 at the local Tech College. Cost me $490 for the semester!. Thats almost 1/3 of the TA I want!!!
Reply:Learning is never a mistake. Spending that much money to have someone tell you what you already know might be. What is covered in the class?
Reply:School is never bad Ive seen that self teaching can produce some bad habits. School can refine and hone your skillsno you cant fix it with a hot pass.BORN TO LOSE, LIVE TO WIN.
Reply:dude i dont feel bad for you cause when i went out to lincolns welding school it cost me around 1500 for the week and i did both motorsports classes !but i learned so much and used so much material it was worth it and now you have made a investment so when you buy your t.a. you will be that much betterplus these part time classes are great to use ther machines and facilites to build projects with the right tools !!dawg
Reply:Banzai, let us know how you like it. The college here only wants students that are going to complete the whole welding program, not shadetree welders.
Reply:Banzi, you're the only one who can answer that question, and it will be a few weeks before you can.My suggestion would be to talk to the instructor before the first class and determine if the class is for you. Most of the decent instructors I've met generally make it known that you're always welcome to stop back and ask questions after the class has officially ended. Many of those classes are a good place to network too.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:Banzai,Hopefully, your class will cover all of today's common welding processes. If the course doesn't offer SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and plastic, et. al., I'd save my bucks. At $490, I'd expect more than "Hi, I'm Weldboy"!!Be well.hankj
Reply:Money well spent!!I took 2 levels of welding classes at my local community college/vo-tech school. There was alot of actual welding BUT understanding metallurgy (on a basic level) that was taught in the theory sessions really helps you to put all the pieces together to produce a quality product. I have also spoken to the instuctor a couple of times since the classes ended with some questions and he has been most helpful.I think/hope you will find it a knowlege gaining experience.MillerMatic 175Thermal Dynamics Drag-Gun PlasmaAirco Bumblebee AC/DC SMAWVictor Super-Range II oxy/act
Reply:All will be good, The instructor is going to branch out a little, cover TIG (AKA modify my intercooler project), and we will do some experimenting with my MECCO Midget on Oxy-Fuel welding Aluminum sheet.
Reply:That is something I want to do eventually. You get to brush up on the old stuff, and also learn some more, that's perfect. Definitely tell us what you think of it. |
