Just mucking around in the factory today and realized there was a lump of splatter on my hand amptroller that never allowed me to turn my PT 185 up full noise.A Tig weld is always more ascetically pleasing than a Mig and its always been our philosophy to have no visible welds or screws in our products. thought I would weld a 50mm glazing post to a base plate:Straight argon6060 3mm wall post (edit: alloy)6063 10mm plate Cant remember the fillerPulse about 3 or 4 HzBefore:Last edited by Brett; 12-22-2007 at 07:09 PM.A good guess is better than a bad measurement

Reply:No pre heating and a bit rushed , just after some comments as to the relative strength of weld compared to inherent strength of weakest member. As always thank you.BrettA good guess is better than a bad measurement
Reply:Nice demo on the demo... How did you bust it apart ?How much pressure?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:My opinion? Cold weld with inadequate penetration.Your fillets pretty much just peeled right off the base plate and/or the tube. Although the workmanship -looked- OK in the 'before' pics, the destructive testing shows that although the base plate had to bend before the assembly failed, once the fillet(s) started to fail they just peeled right off.More bevel on the end of the tube, preheat the aluminum, and use more amps to get better fusion into both the end of the tube and into the base plate. If the welds had adequate penetration, I think that the entire baseplate and tube would have pretty been wrecked before the welds let go. At least that's what you usually -try- to achieve. Don't make the weld the weakest point, there is enough stress going on there already. Thanks for the pics and putting yourself 'on the line'.Last edited by MoonRise; 12-22-2007 at 10:56 PM.
Reply:I agree with all you said Moonrise.More amps? PT185 flat out.Just goes to show it can look great ...but...After that I tried a few corner fillets , 3.5mm wall 6061 T6 ,they looked good also but penetration wasn't what I would have liked. So...Changed balance from auto to 90% penetration and changed gas from Ar to 50/50 AR/He.Completely different, welds not as attractive as Ar but strength+.Will do another glazing post with pics when I've got some 1/8 electrodes the 3/32's dont like He/Ar @ 185 amps.A good guess is better than a bad measurement
