Defect?

What is the hole I'm looking at called?  1/8in aluminum 5052-H34 welded per ASW D17.2 class C.  I don't have the piece in front of me to measure the void.  Originally rejected as suck back but I don't know, and I'm not sure he did either.  if you recognize it I'd appreciate your expertise. Reply:Looks like the end of a weld..Done badly..Rejected because of a crappy welder.That is where the cracks start from every time.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Ummm, yeah it is a rejectable defect.  Crater not filled is a stress riser and like the zap said it will crack right there.I'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:"Always fill yer craters!"My first welding boss drilled that into us big time, he hated craters, even on non-critical parts.Yes, I'd reject it. Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:jvan100 - In welding nomenclature it is termed porosity, and in welding literature you will find entire chapters dedicated to its causes.   OPUS

Reply:If it's a tubing or similar type assembly. Always leave a small area unwelded: Someplace easily accessible! Then, weld up rest of assembly and let it cool. Then go back and seal off "vent" before it has a chance to heat up.Weldtek
