I have an electric smoker on the patio that my German Shepard chewed the cord off of last year.  I fixed the cord yesterday and plugged it up to check it out.  I stuck a thermometer in there for a while and it went up to about 260. It hit me that I could plug this thing in and lay a bunch of 7018 on the rack and dry them out.  It would work great. It would allow me to dry out 5-10 lbs at a time for an upcoming job, etc. Should make my welds smell good too.StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!
Reply:I would think this will be counter productive since if your welds smell good you'll probably get hungry to.

Reply:When I was in welding school the instructor had an old refrigarator with a light bulb in it.  It worked.  I bought a rod oven for my shop wouldn't trade for it.  Keeps them dry and hot ready for use at any time.  Well worth the investment.
Reply:For my farm code work, I built an oven from 8" pipe and put a 6" electric stovetop eye in the bottom. It'll keep them around 220-225. It's perfect for that, but with that said for code work I pop the top on a new can and let the customer asorb the cost. What doesn't get burnt up, gets put into the "oven"
Reply:From the research I've done including on this site 260 degrees is only enough for storage of already dry rods, if they need drying out you need at least 500 degrees, you are not just drying them but the molecular structure needs to be restored to it's original state as well which takes 500+ degrees for 2 hours (or more?).Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.

Reply:what is the toxicity of the flux???  it wouldn't sound too appetizing to eat something cooked after  the rods . . .-- fredLincoln 180C MIG
Reply:I've got a rod oven here that I don't use if anyone is interested.
Reply:as hillbillyfab calls it -farmcode-  no drying required.  real code...not near hot enough to dry out old rod..

Reply:I may be a little off topic...What is the upper temp limit for baking rods?I imagine they could get awful hot without changing molecules?tractor, loader.dozer, backhoe, and all the tools to keep em movin

Reply:From memory Lincoln recommends 700F+ for drying rod.
Reply:300°C to 350°C for two hours to bake EXX16 / EXX18 electrodes. Recommend only bake once, flux can be affected if excess baking is completed. After baking hold at 100°C - 120°C for storage. (Holding oven)Use from quiver at 80°C - 100°C. Return to holding conditions at end of shift.Aletrnative - Use vacuum packed rods - no need to bake. Will last 8.0 hrs from foil package, after 8.0 hours return to holding conditions, then quiver conditions for use.Hope this helps.
Reply:STICK-MAN, box is 6" X  6" inside dimension, looks like 50 lbs would go in there. Has divider that separates it into 4 compartments. $85 + actual shipping, no handling charge. Attached Images
