... my LINCOLN SP135+ ?  i tried to weld some exhaust pipe to a flange 1/4" . 025 wire didn't cut it. i switched to fcaw and got the job done , but very messy  what do you recomend ? i'm new to welding, maybe i wasn't doing it right ?thanx97 S10 excab, VORTECH supercharger, fmic.a broken down 13.8 @ 97Lincoln SP135 PLUS
Reply:My 150 amp Millermatic runs .035 easily so what was wrong with the .025?  Was it too cold without penetration?  If so, try more wire speed to increase current.Get it hot and hit it hard...
Reply:S10,What's your setup?  Gas?  To get fusion to the 1/4" without burning through the exhaust pipe, you need to direct most of the heat to the 1/4", which you probably know already.Be well.hank

Reply:That machine wont burn 035,, will do 030, but,,,, turning the wire up is what gives more current. V is more or less the arc intensity.  Turn both up to get more power.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:Could be the coating on the pipe--aluminized pipe has to be ground off down to bare steel, and some old stuff had monel in it, I think and was very hard to weld with a mig, we used an ancient ol stick burner at @150 amps to burn thru and get it started before migging the rest.

Reply:i tried the .035 wire yesterday. had my settings at 2 1/2 w/s and "H" volts. it cooked that wire just fine, layed down some nice beeds on some scap 16g. i have. i will try it on thicker stuff some time this fine holiday. i am going to get some .030 though.i would still like a basic explanation on the wire speed vrs volts, if possible.97 S10 excab, VORTECH supercharger, fmic.a broken down 13.8 @ 97Lincoln SP135 PLUS
Reply:I've run about 25 lbs of .035 wire thru my Lincoln SP135+ -- works great!
Reply:As wire speed increases , the wire gets closer to the work causinga shorter arc , more current and less voltage. As wire speed decreases, the arc lenghtens causing an increasein voltage and a drop in current.( hope I got it right, if not , I'm sure I'll here from the forum.)Don
Reply:Wirespeed is the current adjustment, more wire = more current, but as was explained it causes the voltage to drop (arc intensity) so you need t bring the V back up to properly burn the wire.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:ok, i have found that more wire speed needs more volts.what does current vs volts do to effect the weld ?the way i see it now : wire speed is just the amount of filler needed. volts is to make the puddle work correctly.97 S10 excab, VORTECH supercharger, fmic.a broken down 13.8 @ 97Lincoln SP135 PLUS
Reply:did you check and change the polarity for the straight mig wire?I have heard this will change the welding characteristic quite a lot.
Reply:I agree with Lucywalker.......Did you check your polarity when going from gas to flux core?Bill W aka AntmanUp on the Mogollon Rim in Arizona. God and 4 Wheelers Country!
Reply:update :i was right, i needed to practice more. on another flange, same size. i used .025 wire, fittup was not to good all around. i layed down beads that looked nearly tig. the the wire burned into the 3/8" flange just fine, and the poor fitup was not an issue at all.97 S10 excab, VORTECH supercharger, fmic.a broken down 13.8 @ 97Lincoln SP135 PLUS
