My turn..I don't have any 1/8" so I used 3/16" instead..No bevels just a 1/8" gap between the parts..Parts..This is how I raised them off the table..Stainless backer..On with the results..Straight argon no backing top..Straight argon no backing bottom..Next!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Mmmm....3/16" is very thick...me thinks.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny
Reply:for 3/16 your gonna need a 3/16 gap to get full pen. thats why it doesnt have as much weld on the back as the other guys. so give that a try and will probably be better. but other than that nice welds, and set up.6G zirconium 702 GTAW 2" xxheavy6G P.E.D. carbon steel GTAW 2" xxheavy3G titanium Gr. 2 - Gr. 7 GTAW up to 3/4" 3G 316L stainless GTAW up to 1" 3G carbon steel GTAW up to 1" 3G Hastalloy GTAW up to 3/4"1G tantalum GTAW up to .060"
Reply:Thanks, nice job.I beveled the 1/4" and had a small gap.  2 passes. The mixed gas sure is hotter.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Thanks for the pics. I guess its just how aluminum welds, nice on top, ugly on bottom.Miller Syncrowave 200Hobart Handler 140Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38E-Z Tube BenderPlasma Cam DHC2
Reply:Whenever I weld aluminum plate or pipe for 1/8" I use a square butt with no edge prep and no more than 1/16 root opening. Anything larger than 1/8" then it gets a Vee groove with 90* included angle, and no land and no gap. Setup is a bit different than if you were using mild steel. Bigger included angles and less to no root opening.
Reply:I wish I could do ones that pretty.   Course, I only been welding aluminum about three hours worth.   I wish it would warm up some.  I really wanna git back at it.  Maybe someday I can do as good.    I'm just reading all you folk's posts and soaking up what I find here and there.    That was a good one.   Made me look twice.
Reply:Zap what "gas mix" are you using? And part 1 is???Jimmy

Reply:I just cant leave this one alone. So, I was reading up on TIG aluminum  and came across something regarding OA aluminum welding. It mentioned that a certain type of OA flux used for gas welding aluminum, also workd well with MIG and TIG. Has anyone tried this? The flux mentioned was Solar Flux Type 202, Mil-Spec.Miller Syncrowave 200Hobart Handler 140Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38E-Z Tube BenderPlasma Cam DHC2
Reply:I did some more testing yesterday, but left the camera at work   I welded another piece of 1/4" X 4 with a bevel, no root gap or backer.  I welded the second pass HOT, then went over the back with the torch and the front again with just the torch.  It cracked on its own.  I went over it again and the crack got bigger.  It broke like nuttin in the vice.   I think I cooked the filler.  In  case any one wants to know, I used 1/8" 5356 and have NO idea what the aluminum is except its diamond plate.DavidEdit:  Maybe its just me, but I have much more control with the tig torch than I do the Oxy torch.  I admit, I have never tried it.  My dad had some rod that was a tubular wire with the flux inside the rod.  It worked for him.Last edited by David R; 01-20-2008 at 01:12 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Sounds like the reason for the cracking is way to much heat input into the joint. you created hotshortness, hot cracking, solidification cracking.... all means the same. Google those terms and read up on it. 1/4" with bevel, no land or gap is the correct joint configuration, just sounds like too much heat. Also make sure you add enough filler, to little will cause cracking as it cools too.

Reply:I disagree with wello here, it looks like a properly done full-pen tig weld on aluminum, which is more than you can say for the earlier pics posted in this thread ...
