I am building a fireplace grate and smoker grate and was wandering which rod would be better for this project. These are the rods that I have in the barn. They are just regular Lincoln (Home Depot) rods. These things will see a lot of heat and wood. Material is 1/2" and 3/4" square stalk Thanks in advance.
Reply:No matter which rod you use, the welds will probably outlast the mild steel for the fireplace grate. MikeOl' Stonebreaker "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Id use 6011s, with whip and pause, just because they wont need to be dried out, unlike the 7018s, if they've been stored in a barn.[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:I would use the 7018s if done right it gives a nicer looking weld.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:You can use either rod, whichever you feel most comfortable welding with is best. If your machine is ac-only, be sure the 7018 rod is ac rod. It comes in ac and dc varieties. You can dry out the 7018 in the household oven if they've been sitting for awhile so they run better.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
