I have a weldcraft WP-17 aircooled torch on my miller tig welder. I am looking for a 'stubby' setup for the torch to reach tight places. I do not have a welding store close that carries these. Does somebody have a suggestion of an on-line source to pick up some of parts without having to buy 10 of everything? I am looking for a 3/32 collet, collet body, maybe a #4 or 5 shorty nozzle  and every thing needed to set up my torch to do some tight welding. I also understand that there may be a gasket that i need to get as well..... still trying to figure out exactly what i need any feed back is appreciated
Reply:This place will sell you one each parts. Reply:I actually just purchased some stubby WP-17 parts to experiment with and just got done trying the stubby gas lens setup, which I am really happy with.I went with all CK stuff, which is made locally to me (in the state of WA) and actually available @ pretty reasonable prices (better than any I've seen on the internet) from my LWS.  You might consider ordering through them, actually.  Central Welding Supply.  They have an internet division here: http://www.welders-direct.com/  It was special order stuff, but they got it in quick along with a new CK torch I had custom built for me.I got a 1/8" stubby regular collet body setup (with standard CK "stubby" collet), and a 3/32" gas lens collet body setup (with special CK stubby "wedge" collet.)So far I have only used the 3/32" stubby gas lens, not the 1/8" regular collet body yet.The costs were about $2.50/collet, $5 for the standard stubby collet body, $7.50 for a gas lens collet body, and there is a special teflon insulator (I'm thinking cost around $5-$6) necessary only for the stubby gas lens (the stubby regular collet body uses the regular teflon insulator.)  And of course a few of the standard WP-9/20 cups (CK 2-series), but those should be readily available and quite cheap ($1-$2/ea)  They might charge some extra shipping for special order from CK.  I can get you any parts numbers you need, just don't leave it to the LWS or you know they'll screw it up.One thing to be aware of with the stubby components loaded on the front of your torch is, even with a full length back cap, a full 7" long tungsten will not recess far enough into the back cap, and will stick out *too far*, and need to be cut or ground down to fix this.  (Too bad they don't make a special "WP-17 extra long back cap" to solve this.  )  I haven't taken the plunge and shortened my freshest, longest 7" long sticks yet, but am considering it.In the first below pic (the comparison one), from left to right on the WP-17 torch you will see the regular length gas lens, stubby length non-gas lens, and full length non-gas lens.  #5 size cups on the top row, #6 size on the bottom row.In the second pic you will see my 200 amp CK trimline (uses WP-17 components) with the stubby gas lens setup. The CK 200 amp trimline air cooled torch has the super flex hose and with this stubby setup and a flex neck, I don't believe a water cooled WP20 has much on it, at least for being used with my 200 amp TIG machine.  (except a whole lot more cost, less portability, more complexity, and more extra things that can fail and go wrong and give you a hassle.  )  CK makes an aircooled torch that can stand up to a lot more heat than weldcraft.  (This ones rated at 200 amps even on A/C)It is harder to unscrew the stubby collet body because there are wrench flats so you can't really just do it by hand like you can with the regular length WP-17 collet bodies.  (That does make switching to different tungsten sizes less convenient.)One thing to be aware of comparing CK to weldcraft stubby components is, weldcraft only makes their stubby collet body in a 1/8" size (and they have you fit smaller collets into that, which I don't know if I like the idea of) whereas CK makes stubby collet bodies in all sizes down to .040"  (The CK approach seems better to me.)I'm not really sold on the special CK "wedge" collet yet, but I need to play around with it more first.  On my first try however I found it was loosening during use.  On the plus side it is really easy to firm it up (nice and positive feel tighting it.)  It costs about the same in stubby version as the regular stubby collet does, so if you are special ordering CK stuff you could get it for the same price.I should get a better pic comparing the stubby gas lens to the rest, in time perhaps.  Its really really nice though, my new favorite setup I think.  Excellent gas coverage too.  If I could only pick one collet body to have, it would be this stubby gas lens.  I just used it in the picture to weld 3/8" aluminum to 1.125" cube shaped aluminum.  It was a little much for the 3/32" tungsten; I think 1/8" would have been more happy.
