My new Miller Maxstar 150s

Due to an early tax refund  I was able to purchase a welder much earlier than I planned.  Here are a couple pictures of my Maxstar 150s and one shot of the MVP plug system.  One of my other hobbies is photography so you will be seeing a lot of pictures of me needing help.  I have never welded before in my life but I'm going to get started tomorrow.  I picked up a piece of scrap steel 1/4" x 6" x 5' the other day at the scap yard.  I plan to cut it into pieces to practice with.  I have some 1/8 6011 and 6013 rods to start with.  I guess around 90 amps for the 6011 and 100 amps for the 6013 as a starting point?Last edited by JeremyFerg; 01-24-2008 at 12:45 AM.
Reply:As per the second picture I had no idea it was common practice to headbutt your welder.  Is this just a vent for when you get upset???  J/K man nice welder.  Practice practice practice.. and then post your photography we all like that kinda stuff!  now go burn some rod!!!
Reply:I managed to burn up 4 rods of 6011 this evening.  I don't have any pics of the results because its dark out now.  Once I got the arc started it seemed very easy to keep it going.  I had a bit of difficulty getting started, but I'm starting to get the hang of it.  I'll get some pictures over the next couple of days.  What is the easiest way to get all of the slag off?  Wire brush in an angle grinder?

Reply:I like the twisted or knot wire wheel in a grinder to get things nice and shiny. You will find that as you get better and smoother the slag will be much easier to remove. When using a chipping hammer try tapping gently at the edges with the chisel end instead of just wacking directly on top.
Reply:I have an older (prior to the MVP system) maxstar 150s and love it....I have run it @ 90 amps from a 15 amp breaker that also has a lamp and my computer running on it burning 3/32 7018's a s fast as I could drop them with no problem....now with 6011's it will trip the breaker once the fan comes on and I get about half way thru the 2nd rod....
Reply:I'm running it off a 220 30 amp breaker.  I ran mostly at 90amps but I did turn it up to 105 once.  I don't think it will ever trip that breaker.
Reply:i have a maxstar 200 DX and love it...i run 1/8 7018 and 6010 rods at like 100 amps and have even run it up as high as 130 on a 110 line...its the only thing i have on the circut and ive only blown the breaker a few times when im burning alot of rod with it..
