Reply:Job #2..This drum is just a mold for some plastics company..It will be coated and then the coating will be split in half..For what?I have no clue..Single heads on each end with a piece of 1/38" C.R.S. thru both ends..Drum..Journal weld..Outside edge weld..Once in the lathe the journal weld must be radiused nice and smooth..Journal done..One more time.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:After turning to size (9.240) the outside must be really smooth so here is how we cheat to get a nice sanded finish without dragging out the toolpost sander..80 Grit paper..Just use the toolpost to clamp it down..Put some tention on it..Run the lathe at around 300 R.P.M. with the feed almost all the way up and presto!Drum done all nice and shiney and smooth..I did get another roller together today also but those pics will have to wait untill tomorrow when I get more as we go along..I get all the fun jobs.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Very nice welds. Where do you put your ground clamp at? If you grounded it to the lathe part would'nt that mess something up in the motor?

Reply:When you mean turn the feed all the way up , do you mean fast feed speed? What is that just sand paper? We sometimes use steel wool , but i haven't had much luck with it.
Reply:Zap my friend, all i can say about that work is dammmmnnnn!!  Not only are those welds perfect, the percision and craftmanship is just plain impressive.

Reply:Zap, or anyone, I have a "positioner" as you call it from work.  I am a mechanic by trade and we use them to resurface brake rotors.  My question is, what are you using to turn it with?  I would like to use that set up at home as we have several positioners at work that we dont use anymore. Thanks,Dave
Reply:The one you see in the picture is electric and made for welding.  It has a foot pedal for speed control.  I have considered making one with a gear motor and lathe chuck, but still have no chuck... Me!

Reply:Originally Posted by zapsterYup fast feed speed..Yup its just 80 grit 1" sandpaper with a cloth back..I don't think steel wool would do anything..Sometimes at the very end I'll use some brown "Scotchbrite" on the surface while spinning around 500 R.P.M. (by hand) for a really deep shine.......zap!
Reply:I get that the positioner is on a motor, but what other motor could be used for the chuck, any ideas?Dave
