Hi. Is anyone required to wear FR clothing? If so what kind of clothing do your wear. I am looking for bib overalls and denium shirts.ThanksMike
Reply:Yep - Company mandated work wear for Welders.I have FR Carhartt Bib overalls, both Brown (Yuk) and Navy Blue - All company supplied.I prefer the Black ones, and wore them for years, but the do not come in FR, and I was paying for them, so I don't squawk too much about the color.I wear long sleeved turtle neck shirts, and denim shirts, but those I supply myself. All of the Millwrights, Mechanics, and WASH STAFF wear Nomex IIIA with reflective striping,Later,Jason
Reply:Sometimes they make me wear fr stuff. It really sucks because it burns up much faster than normal carharts and is a lot more expensive. Most places I go to let welders wear carharts and normal welding gear. It's different from one company to another.
Reply:I used to wear fire retardant coats in the steel mill, the green ones that the welding stores sell.  Jeans were OK for most jobs.  I still wear the green coat sometimes. The most important thing is not to wear any synthetic, it will melt to your skin if it burns.   Wool or cotton are both OK.  Fire retardant is just the next step up.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:My experience with FP clothing has been bad. Wife bought me some one year for xmas and my shirt burned up the first time I used it from grinder sparks hitting it. It didnt flame up but it smoldered. I noticed when I became dizzy from the fumes.UA Local 598
Reply:Used to have to wear FR working in oxidation ovens, along with Nomex hoods.  We found out that the FP treated cotton from our uniform supplier had a 'recommended wash limit' of 10 or 20 washes before it was supposed to be re-treated.  Ours were never retreated.  The new ones would do fine, but the ones that had been in circulation for a while would smolder slowly for hours. ::had a guy take one off and toss it on the floor after the cuff of one sleeve started smoking, by the end of the day it was a reeking pile of ash with a name tag sticking out it.::Now days I use cotton/canvas shirts (buy them from academy or wally world in the spring on clearance)Soak them in a bucket of old fashioned powdered starch and water mixed heavy - hang em up to dry. Will leave them looking shiny if you have enough starch on them. They will bounce sparks, spatter and, grindings off like glass.
