this fit was far from perfect. the gap closed on one side, 3/32'' on the other side.  the land was 3/32'' to 1/16.''  i used 3/32'' 6010 for the root and hot pass, and the amps varied greatly.  i blew thru my root pass in two areas trying to push the suck back out.  i capped it with the 3/32'' 7014.  i think this rod is to fluid for me on pipe.  i know some of the problem was the rod angle, and this is my first try at pipe welding in 20 years.   what did i do wrong.  thanks. robertbad tie in.here is where the land was 1/16'' but the gap was 3/32''burned thru the root here. sidesidetopbottom.  i started the bottom at the 5 o'clock position.
Reply:Ya been drinkin?  I have a question for you, how come the bottom has no spatter and the other pic does?  Long arc?Just a few notes.  You will not be allowed to use 7014 on pipe, its 6010 or 7018 around here.  What ever the WPS calls for.  I don't do much pipe but it doesn't look THAT bad.Keep at it.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:the wife rang the dinner bell right after i ran a file over the bottom.  i was long arcing the top coming in from the 10 o'clock without a doubt.  i am going to start another thread on the 7014 vs 7018 in pipe welding characteristics.
Reply:When i took a pipe welding course at Napa community college, the instructor taught us to weld only as allowed on the 6 g welding test at our local refineries. 5/32 6010  5 P  only . start to finish . it was a bitch, and i was already a journey man for 15 years , at that time . When i took the test , he passed me , although I would NOT have , if I were the instructor. I never tried to get a pipe welding job. It's a job for the prima donnas . some are suited for it , some NOT.[SIZE="5"Yardbird"

Reply:Maybe I'm speaking from being envious, as i did not consider myself as being suitable for pipe welding. Most ARE  NOT, no matter how good they are at Plate welding . Pipe welders have to be self assured , totally sure that they are the BEST  welders around , and that NOTHING is too good for the pipe welder . Now, i can't speak for those that weld big (diameter) cross country pipe. I  am talking about the stuff they weld in refineries. Where , i am told there are NO flaws  allowed in the x-rays of their welds . For me, i had no trouble doing water clear x-ray welding on the roundabouts of the nuclear subs , during my navy yard apprenticeship , but pipe welding is another matter . And, around here (we have 5 refineries in the S F bay area) the Boilermaker union member pipe welders make some good wages.[SIZE="5"Yardbird"
