Greetings, I have an old Westinghouse Type RS 250 welder with a rectifier with numbers A201K1DA and 276A135G01 on it. I was able to change the transformer wires for use with 220, but having a problem where the the power wires going to the rectifier/converter. The 440 wire had a 220 volt lead and 2 110 volts hooked to it. I was suggested to remove the 220 leg and it should work. It does work, but not working correctly. I searched the web for a schematic of the device, but came up with nothing to help me. I would appreciate and assistance that can be offered. Rich
Reply:You need a real electrician!Don't screwq up and kill yourself.I scean people go the cheep way out all the time Be carful
Reply:Is this welder 3ph or 1ph
Reply:Ive got a westinghouse... not the one you're looking for. No schematics for mine but I traced out each individual wire and drew it out on a big sheet of vellum. Most of the transformers had ratings on them, or based upon the numberings on the gauges you could figure out what each one did. If yours is anything like mine (TYPE RCV 300Amp) the wires will all be gray and wired ptp. It's a friggin mess. I made my own coding system using a multi-bag of zip-ties. Red on one end of a wire, red on the termination of the same wire, black-red on another etc. etc. till I had each wire sorted and drawn into my schematic. It took me a good weekend to get it all sorted out to find that a strange relay (I forget the actual name but it was "...-o-matic") was stuck. It took me a while as I said, and mine is single phase 240V.Sadly that might be an easier way to get a schematic than hoping someone here will have one. Westinghouse disappeared a long time ago. Mine showed up at my doorstep for free- I can use it for mig welding as needed but in retrospect it probably wasn't worth the effort of getting it to fire up right. I dropped 450 on an older Airco- Heliwelder and am happy as a pig in an MSD tank. All depends on what your time is worth though.I can remember in the 7th grade my mom said "people will offer you drugs" by the 10th grade I was like, "where the hell are these people?"
Reply:I did trace the wires and ended up just dropping the 220 leg wire and left the 220 wires alone. It is now hooked up to 220 single phase and the rectifier is used to enable maximum power to the leads. I hooked up a Miller wire feed to it and it seems to be working OK for now. Thanks for your suggestions, this may or may not be the correct way, but will do until I can find a schematic. |
