I need to do a little welding on an excavator bucket - putting a hook on the back of the bucket. I've only dealt with mild steel before. I've been told the bucket linkage is T1 steel, but no one knows what type of steel the bucket is made from. The bucket is a Wain-Roy. Based on the wear patterns, I'm going to guess that it is mild steel with selected pieces added from hardened steel. Those of you who weld on the buckets, what do you do? Any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated.
Reply:on t1 depending upon the grade we use metalloy 100 x or metalloy 110 the thing about it is what is the grade of the hook and do you know what kind of forces it will encounter , is it a chain hook ? will the temper in the chain hook cause problems from welding , my personal choice would probably be 7018 on something of the such. if u went say a36 to 514 b persay it does no good to use metalloy 100 or 110 when ure welding to a low tensile strength a36 so u use 70,000 rod , wire
