Reply:Alright, had a late start today. Too much alcohol last night, and a headache this morning could be the blame.Anyway, here are some pictures of todays progress. I cut a door, with a built in damper, and welded it on viaa 4 dollar gate hinge. So far my grand total on this project is about 12 dollars. That is cost of the steel forthe firebox, and the hinge. The tank was a donor, so that helps cut costs. Let me know what you think so far.More to come.QMiller Syncrowave 200Hobart Handler 140Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38E-Z Tube BenderPlasma Cam DHC2

Reply:Thanks guys.Okay, some more pics. Changed my mind on how I want the door for the smoke box to be. I decided to flange the boxinstead so I can use a flat door. Probably wont make a difference in the capacity, but it does make it easier forme to make a door. This is it for today, I will post more pics as they come.It might not look cool yet, but it should be a lot better when I cut the acces hole. This is just to give an Idea.QMiller Syncrowave 200Hobart Handler 140Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38E-Z Tube BenderPlasma Cam DHC2

Reply:If I remember correctly, it was about $1150 from Indiana Oxygen. That was about 3 years ago.Miller Syncrowave 200Hobart Handler 140Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38E-Z Tube BenderPlasma Cam DHC2
Reply:Honestly, your door hinge is not proportional to your line of work; I mean all your smooth cutting and then the hinge. You can easily make good looking rugged hinge out of a piece of 5/8” or ¾” rod …IMO, it would look much better. Just my two cents.Nice progress however.
Reply:Im not building this for looks, just functionality. If it was for a customer, I would have gone a different route, but its just for smoking ribs here at home. Its going to be painted black in the end, so its not going to matter.Miller Syncrowave 200Hobart Handler 140Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38E-Z Tube BenderPlasma Cam DHC2

Reply:Nice work. If you are as good cooking as you are building that thing, I want to come eat with you . I will bring the beer .
Reply:Thanks. Finished the welding, here are some pics. I might give it a test run tomorrow.Miller Syncrowave 200Hobart Handler 140Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38E-Z Tube BenderPlasma Cam DHC2
Reply:Nice. I have the same plan for a compressor tank we have laying around, just haven't had time to get to it. I have a much different design in mind though. Let us know how it works. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:The smoker looks great. I'm just not so sure of how it will smoke. Looks more like a grill to me. Keeping your fire alive and the main chamber at a 220 degree temp or so might be tough. I think that is why most smokers have the fire box off to the side. But what do I know, I use an electric smokerThe project looks great though.Tim
Reply:Pretty nice. You got plans for a stand right? Wheels or no?
Reply:Thanks guys.I have a damper on the fire box, and im going to put a couple on the stacks as well. This should give me enough control over the temps. There are a lot of different types of smokers out there, and this is just my variation. The rack about 20 inches from the fire, and there is a plate between the fire and the food so no direct heat will hit it. I think it will be fine.I will probably make a small kart for it out of agle iron. Whatever the case I do want wheels of some sort.Miller Syncrowave 200Hobart Handler 140Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38E-Z Tube BenderPlasma Cam DHC2

Reply:Looks yummy, now am not only jealous, but drooling as well. I am the only welder I know with two smokers and 3 grills and all were store bought.Last edited by Jolly Roger; 03-04-2008 at 11:37 PM.Reason: added to itThe difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship.
