So I had the day off from work and decided to get everything made up and installed so I would be ready to talk when my Walcott order comes with my 4' firestick firefly in a couple of days. For the mount, I am glad I took CAD class last semester. Although we only learned basic functions, I was completely capable to make a design for the antenna mount all by myself.  So after some designing and revising, I printed it to scale and came with this:So I cut the pieces out of some 1/8" Steel bar after I had traced the CAD images onto them.  Bent, and welded via wire feed flux core (decent welds, I think for flux core at least)  I am running a Clarke 130EN.Put a couple layers of primer on it, some paint, and some clear coat (see signature lol)For the radio itself, I didnt want it to be in the way of sight nor my legs.  I drilled holes on the left side of the drivers underdash (by knees) but decided that wasnt the right place :brickwall   Of course right after I mounted it there, there wasnt any place for the mic and it just wasnt working out.  So this is what I came out with...Man did it hurt to drill holes.......  I bought an 18 foot coax cable with the 259 standard connectors and ran that very sneakily behind the spare tires, under the back seats, up to the shotgun seat, under it, and to the radio.  Nearly completely invisible.I'm 21 and learningAvid 4wd enthusiastASE Master tech (Automotive), mechanic/fabricator by trade

Reply:Redhatman, I don't mean to hijack your thread. I used a cardboard template to get the right shape then transfered it to 3/4" plywood. Clamped the plywood to the bench and used that as a jig to get the basic shape. A bit of tweaking with the vise and hammer and cut and tacked to the frame. I used the same idea as you (existing taillight mounts) to mount it on the top and 2 places on the bottom of the sides. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Reply:i like wilson or k-40. i run wilson on my big rig and my pickup. my wife has the k-40.both do really well. im into radios too.
Reply:You wont be weakening the welds by grinding if : (A) you got decent penetration and  (B) you dont get carried away with the grinder. With no more load than that mount is going to see, you could have gotten by safely with about 4 good, hot tack welds."I need this parade like I need a hole in the head"~John F.Kennedy
Reply:Not that I turn the equipment on much anymore, but here's what I run for any of those radio geeks left in the world that give a crap.My mobile:1600 watts into my K-40...KABOOOM!1600 watts into my Wilson 1000...still going after ten years. My base:Saliut 7/8 wave driven by a Henry 5KD5 amp (5KW RMS) which is driven by a JB12 modulatorHere's the Saliut....most *** kicking 10-11 meter antenna out there for those into radio that never heard of it:http://cgi.ebay.it/ANTENNA-27MHZ-DA-...QQcmdZViewItemBoth base & mobile have the unlocked Uniden 2510 (with some internal redesign that I did that isn't common) and the base has many flavors of different Yaesu rigs and of course, a Tram D201A sitting there for the show piece. BTW, the Henry base amp has a 240V 40A service supplying it and the Texas Star mobile amp has a 1AWG 12v/175A service feeding it! Maybe I can TIG weld with the output of these things? Needless to say, I used to be a huge fan of the cable company and many poor bastards that tired to watch TV in the neighborhood.
Reply:ooooo... Uniden2510, you have my attention.  I gots one of them.  I'll pm ya, I dont want to hijack the thread too badly. But my personal choice of antenna, either version of the 8' whip ( fiberglass or stainless ), Wilson 1000, or a Francis 5.5.  Listed in order of preference, though it's a toss up between the wilson or the francis.

Reply:Yes, you can be heard a long ways.  There is a guy in town (Cadillac man) that used to run a linear at about 1 kw.  Don't know why he neede that much power to advertise his 'business' of taking truckers from the petro stop, right next door, to Mexico.  I still think he is running something as I can hear him clear across town.  Some truckers have said that they could hear him all the way to New York.  Mine, I use it for school though I must say it is sooo much quieter now than what I remember.  I hadn't used one since....oh....highschool in the late 80's.  At first, I was getting kinda mad thinking it didn't work.  The good thing is it discourages people from changing MY radio station but its just high enough to not block the vents but low enough to allow ease of climate control adjustment and shifting without bashing my knuckles.  Last edited by 3 weelin geezer; 02-03-2008 at 11:54 AM.

Reply:I like the mount geezer.  Something is up with my squelch...if I turn it up its basically on mute (cant hear anything at any range), and if I turn it down it is all fuzzy and hard to hear people...I know it sounds reverse of what it should be but it really isnt.  There is pretty much only one radio tune that I can hear people at.I'm 21 and learningAvid 4wd enthusiastASE Master tech (Automotive), mechanic/fabricator by trade
Reply:Thank you.  Usually, people think its some sort of satelite radio.
Reply:Great mount, and just to add my 2 cents to the "grind it down" subject, grind it.  That mount would hold 50 pounds, it's pretty stout.  Asthetic grinding does nothing to the strength of the welds, I'd consider it if you aren't happy with the way it is.  Otherwise, great design, and nice setup, I like the small CB's as well.  I run a tiny Midland CB in my Cherokee.  Nothing fancy, but on the trail it gets the job done.  When I got my setup i was not a welder, so I got bent over and bought a mount lol.  Nice work, very cool!Have a Jeep Cherokee?  Click Here!
Reply:Boy oh boy, here is my CB mount I made today for his Jeep....Apparently mine was the test subject and now after a bit of welding class my Clarke laughs at CB mounts... Reply:That sure is purty for fluxcore.  Good job.  Looks all sandblasted.  I can never get it like that.  Mine leaves all kinds of slag in the nooks.
