Looks like I'll have a chance to make an offer on some welding equipment that's been left behind due to a death in the family of a friend of a friend. I haven't seen the equipment myself but my friend brought back some pictures for me after I told him I was interested in some of the items. There's a Millermatic 185 with tank and regulator and a bunch of older Victor O/A equipment including a complete Victor setup with tanks. They've got no real interest in the equipment so it seems like a good opportunity to pick up some deals. I want to offer them a fair price then hope I get the "friends" discount so I'm looking for some price advice. I've done a bit of research but figure that many of you folks have more experience with used equipment. I've attached a couple of pics.I'm interested in the O/A primarily for light cutting and heating, figure I'll continue to use my TIG for most welding that I might otherwise use O/A to perform. Seems I've seen new O/A setups without the tanks for around $200-250. For this used rig with tanks and cart I was thinking of offering $150-200? Too much, too little, things to look for besides obvious physical wear or damage?I've been welding for years with a Century 135 MIG, doing OK within the limitations of a 110V welder. As you all know it just doesn't have the moxie to do a great job on some of the tube work that I do on our sand rail even with careful joint prep, preheat and a bit of luck. From what I've read the Millermatic 185 is/was a pretty decent MIG welder, one that's used by a lot of folks doing tube chassis fab. I've done some searches and nobody seems to raise any issues with the machine. I'm figuring that this machine would be quite a step up in capability from my Century. So, price to offer? I was thinking around $400? Other than checking that it works in each power setting and the wire feed works over the full range anything else to look for? Many thanks for any comments, advice, etc. that you folks might offer. Reply:You need to find out if the man owned the tanks? or rented them, I he owned them then you will need paper work on them, or at least in my erea this fact. If tanks are rented then I would only go about fifty or seventy five for hose, regulators, and little add ons. tips ect. if tanks are owned then to buy at least my home town would cost about two fifty or three hundred apiece. so you can adjust price , You seem to have a good noogin on your shoulders for such a transaction. As to the welder if you can get it for what you was thinking I would jump on it. I am not sure of its age but it goes back a ways, however if its in good shape you can really do a job with it and there is no comparison to it and what you have. good luck and happy burning.one good deed is worth a thousand good intentions
Reply:Rockytop, thanks for the response and the advice. From what I'm hearing in other forums the price of the basic O/A gear is a lot lower than I expected (that's a good thing for me). Your price advice was right in line. Too bad those darn tanks are so expensive. I was lucky to get some big (well, 155 CF) tanks of Argon and C25 from a neighbor for my current workshop. He was a Snap-On salesman and just had them kicking around his garage. They were really old but even with the retest cost it was a deal. Much better than filling up my little 20 CF bottles that I'm keeping as spares.Won't get a chance to inspect the equipment until next week. If it all looks OK I'm going to try to just offer him a single price for the lot. Sure hope I land that MM185, I'm hearing it's a pretty sweet machine. Thanks again,TinkerCentury 135GS, ThermalArc 250GTS |
