Having looked at my visa bills today, I won't be buying a 700 - 800 dollar mig rig. So, I was wondering about the stick welders. I did do a little stick welding years ago. Is a mig weld so much better than a stick weld? If you were to grind them both down to finish it, would there be any difference left? (for steel and Iron)

Reply:Noel, You should listen to Sandy, knowlege and welder skills obviously not a weak spot.  Anyway, my two cents.  I wont comment on mig welders, because I dont want to steer you either way.  But what I will do is to say there is a dandy little welder called a Lincoln 225/125 AC/DC  Its a classic little buzz box.  I dont ever recommend AC for a number of reasons including safety.  AC good for arc blow, which can be overcomed by keeping your clamp close to where your working,  and AC is also good for aluminum tig.   Otherwise the only reason to use AC with this machine is for the 126-225 amperes you can get.  This mostly amounts to big rods, and welding something a little faster.  My recommendations are 3/32 6013 for your thin gauge.  You can weld well with dc set low.  For thicker than 1/8" use a 1/8 6011 on dirty or painted steel, and 3/32" 7018 for clean steel the same thickness.  7018 will deliver a prettier weld, and give a slightly stronger tensile, but mostly its a more ductile weld because its low hydrogen.  I prefer to build my trailers out of 7018 for instance.  But either one will work.  Anyway, you stick with a stick welder for a couple hundred dollars, oh a DC machine and you'll do much better.  DC is safer in damp conditions or in cramp places.  Less likely to recieve electrical shock with DC.  Just my two cents and nothing more.  But for the money I think its best.  For the record I can mig, tig, and stick as well as gas weld.  I have never owned a mig or tig.  I have owned and still do a couple stick welders.  One I recomnended I owneed until selling to a friend who needed a handy lil welder.  I loved that machine and at times wish I still had it.  Good luck CHRIS
