Has anyone here ever welded piping for gaseous hydrogen? Does anyone know where i can find articles or pictures of the materials and procedures used (welding processes, etc)?
Reply:actually if anyone used hydrogen to weld or heat things, or for any reasons id like to know about what happened.
Reply:Hydrogen is sometimes used in the automated welding of nickel alloys, and some CNC plasma cutting operations.   Other than that it's presence at a weld is usually very detrimental, such as with hydrogen embrittlement.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:seems to me we did an IBM project in the 80's involving a  3" copper line  and some very clean silversolder requirements...seem to recall they only wanted 20% penetration into the fitting...

Reply:Hydrogen is commonly used as a coolant for machinery.  Liquid hydrogen has a specific heat 2.3x greater than water.  It greatly reduces the size requirements of some types of machinery such as electrical generators.

Reply:the hydrogen was not used for cooling, it was used in various processes.. pretty sure it was L copper, cleaned at a special facility and shipped with nitrogen in it...

Reply:standard copper socket fittings, just cleaned....

Reply:We designed a small steam turbine driven hydrogen compressor system back in 2002.  I researched the piping codes for specifics but didn't find anything out of the ordinary then....basically steel piping per ASME B31.3.Now it looks like H2-specific piping specs are readily available.  Probably due to the renewed interest in H2-fueled vehicles. Here's what I just found by Google'ing "piping design for hydrogen".  These should help steer you toward any particular welding procedures.http://files.asme.org/catalog/stllc/printbook/20529.pdfhttp://www2.iccsafe.org/states/seatt...hapter%207.pdfhttp://avt.inel.gov/pdf/hydrogen/h2s..._appendixc.pdfBTW...I understand your question to be welding procedures FOR hydrogen piping and not welding procedures using hydrogen gas.Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor

Remember an increase in weld speed may have little value if the weld cycle time is measured in seconds. The hydrogen addition to argon can increase arc stability on specific, very thin low amp applications less than10 amps. When welding specific alloy steels with hydrogen gas, be beware of the potential for hydrogen embrittlement. Hydrogen can also decrease the potential life of the tungsten, depending on the hydrogen content and tungsten type."Lots of info on the internet.
