After finding this forum and doing some research I decided to buy me a Hobart 140 yesterday.  I decided to go with it because I won't be doing any heavy duty welding, just around the house, atv repairs/trailors and such.  I have never mig welded before so this is all new to me.  I got it assembled this morning and decided to play with it some to see how much work its going to take to learn this.  I was hoping someone could look at this pic of my last weld and give me some advice to make it better?  Plus I was wondering if the brown slag looking stuff is normal for a mig weld or if maybe I'm doing something wrong there as well?  I'm using .030 solid with 75/25 argon/Co2 mix if that helps.  Here is the pic, thx.
Reply:It looks good for a a beginer. The slag looking things are silicin from the wire they are normal. Just practice more. And good luck.
Reply:If you clean the material some more before you start, you will not see that as bad........

Reply:If you are going to weld some thicker metal 3/16 to 1/4 ,get some .035 flux-cored wire.you will get a lot better fushion ,and safer weld.clean up is not that bad and it does a better job on thicker stuff.
