What would be one of the better 110 volt mig welders and, are they worth buying for a begineer welder.
Reply:Depends on what you want to weld, how thick of material you want to weld, and how often you are going to weld.  I personally prefer Lincoln products over Miller and Hobart because Lincoln tends to give the customer more for their money than the others.  Hobart is a cheap plastic knockoff of the Miller units and is now also being marketed by Harbor Freight.  Dont even consider the units from Harbor Freight, they are pieces of junk, had one, didnt like it, and got rid of it quick.  Clarke 130EN is fairly decent machine for the money, the parts of the gun interchange with the Lincoln Magnum 100 mig gun and can be found almost anywhere and the warranty is 10yrs on transformer\rectifier with 2yrs on everything else.  Check out www.weldingdepot.com for the Clarke.  Check Lowes and Home Depot for the Lincoln units.  Goodluck!A few of my toys !LinuxMintManjaroMiller Roughneck 2E Lincoln WeldPak 100HTP MTS 160 Chicago Electric 80amp Inverter   Victor O/A
Reply:I welded for years with a 110V 85amp Century MIG (now for sale).  Found a good deal on a MM250X, so I upgraded.  The main thing that forced the upgrade was duty cycle.  I could weld 1/4" with the 110V, but only for about a minute at a time.
Reply:i also had a century 'quik fix 'that i used forever ! PAToyota is dead-on about the duty cycle.i haven't had any dealings with  the top3 makers as far as 110v but the century did the trick for me for a good while plus it's good to learn on since you have time to concentrate since machine won't allow to run high volts for any amount of time. i'm sure thermal arc 130 mig is also a deal. just my .02  i don't have a spunky username just what it is, me!
Reply:what about the hobart 110 volt
Reply:I used the Hobart 140 Handler for a good 6 months and loved the thing. They are built very well, and I never had any problems with it. Not everything is a cheaper design on the Hobart models. The 140 comes with a miller mig gun, and also has a few other cross-brand bits.
Reply:The Hobart 140 is a great machine to start with
Reply:I've got the Lincoln 110v wire feed. I've made grills, a heavy duty trailer hitch and a boat trailer. It helped that I learned on an old Marquette a.c. stick welder so going to a wire feed makes welding toooo easy now. I love the thing. A tip: go to your local welding machine dealer and see if he has a test machine set up for you to use. if he does, buy it from him because he will be the best at offering advice in the future. That's what I did.
Reply:Personally I would suggest picking out what model you want locally, then buying it online. Ebay has AWESOME deals on these things, and they also provide free shipping and no tax. The difference between buying a Hobart 140 local to buying it online is about 80-90 bucks.
Reply:I cannot say that I agree with that philosophy.  The local guy gives you all the help and then you cheat him out of a sale.  I tend to buy local when I can even if it costs a bit more because then I know I have someone to go talk to - a valuable resource.  The things I buy online are things that I'd buy locally at the discount stores where you aren't going to get any customer service anyway.  Support your local weld shop!
