I have 6 sticks of 2.5x2.5x3/8" angle 20 foot long I was thinking about making a small utility trailer to haul behind my '89 Ford broncoII that is now powered by a '91 ford explorer Motor. I just need a trailer with a deck of 4.5x8. I plan on making it capable of hauling 2 1000cc yamahas but I just think the 2.5x2.5x3/8 is a bit over kill I don't want it to be any heavier than it needs to be. so what should I build with this steel? Any Idea how much a trailer that size would weigh if made with this steel.http://www.wefabricateit.com
Reply:2½x2½x3/8ths??? That's some pretty beefy stuff. Anyway just barely over 6 pounds a foot. You'll have to calculate axle, wheel, tire, and deck weight too. If it just happens to be 3/16ths then that's like 3.14 pounds a foot.
Reply:my 5x10 from 3x3 1/4" is just under 1000lbs...that size would be good for a table frame or some heavy duty legs for stands etc....
Reply:You can always use the heavy angle to build the main frame and lighter angle or tube for cross members. The 7K trailer at work has 2X3 3/16 angle fro the outter deck and cross members but the main frame is 5" chanel. A trailer this size would not require a seperate frame. I'd just make the perimiter out of the heavy angle and make the cross members of light angle and deck with 3/4" plywood. I would stick with 4x8 so it fits a std sheet of plywood, but you can get 5' wide sheets or 10' long sheets. Sit down before you see the prices, I priced a 4x 10' sheet of T1-11 plywood at almost $100 for 1 sheet. The 4x8 would have been less than $25.
Reply:ok for a 4x8 deck trailer to carry to 400lb crotch rockets what would be the minimum size angle to use will 2x2x3/16's be ok I may just hold onto this 2.5x2.5 for when I move into a new house with a garage and make a nasty welding tablehttp://www.wefabricateit.com |
