Greetings all, I have been associated with cutting / welding for years, mostly repair, having done 3 years in a shipyard setting, so am not completely w/out experience. THE QUESTION-the other day we had a liquid discharge coming from the acetylene side on a cutting torch? Some what (yes not totally committed here) smelling like solvent / alcohol? Has us fooled at work, forman put the bottle out of service. Before that while cutting made the torch act odd, suppose a bit of the liquid (droplets??) coming into the tip would cause it to act odd. Any one have this experience / know what could have been going on?
Reply:I believe the gas is disolved in a solvent in the tank, acetone..and if the gas comes out too quick(not good) it draws the solvent out( bad thing)...
Reply:Yeah I assume it's for the acetone (which is what keeps the acetylene in the canister from getting too high pressure, as it's unstable past I think ~15PSI?).

Reply:Originally Posted by Rog02The liquid was acetone that the acetylene is dissolved into in the bottle. One of two things occurred:1. The bottle had been layed on it's side for transport, in which case it should have been allowed to stand upright for the acetone to settle down in the bottle before being placed into service. This is the most likely cause. Let the bottle stand at least an hour or better yet overnight and it will sort itself out.2. You exceeded the 1/7 rule (OK, I know the standard is changed to 1/10, but humor an ol' fart). Your torch is drawing more gas than the bottle is capable of delivering without puking up liquid acetone. Either use a smaller torch or get a bigger bottle. |
