Side business insurance

i know we have talked about this before and i did some searching and didn't really find what i was looking for, my question is for the guys that just do the odd side job out of your garage at home how many of you carry liability insurance? and if you do and don't mind telling how much do you pay a year for the insurance?EDIT: when i mean little side jobs i mean little stuff like railings and small projects, nothing that will go on the road.ThanksRyanLast edited by trouble007; 01-23-2011 at 11:35 AM._______________________OF COURSE I DON'T LOOK BUSY... Reply:I don't do to much sidework welding, not good enough at it to charge!  But I used to run a side business doing construction before the economy tanked.  I had an LLC set up and carried liability insurance.  It wasn't much, around 500 a year.  This also covered my tools in case of theft.  Personally I felt better if something were to happen I knew it would be covered.  One thing if your worried would be to set up an LLC so if something were to happen they can't come after your personal property, just your LLC.
Reply:My side jobs are tiny, I recently made some fence posts for one of my rentals, and an anchor to hook a clothes line to.  I have yet to charge for any welding.I have an Umbrella Policy for personal liability that is attached to my auto policy.  Cost will depend on what the insurer feels the degree of risk is. They ask me questions such as: Do your tenants have dogs? have any of them bit anyone? then they have a list of breeds they do not like. Is there a trampolene (sp?) on any of your properties? The cost  of a couple of million covering your back is surprizingly low for the peace of mind you get.I do not publicly acknowlege that I have this protection, I feel it would be like bait before a lawyer, like chum before a shark.
