We needed 6 light holders for a customer.  2" pipe 6" long, no holes in the plate  My son cut up the 1/4" plate with the hypertherm 600, cleaned them up and welded the pipe to the base.  He ground the galv off 3/4" up the pipe.  Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Good to see an American company competing with China and far eastern companies by using child labor!   He does nice work. Good to see a kid learning a trade and working hard rather than sitting their a$$ in front of the TV. You're paying him what, $.25 an hour, then deducting meals and room and board?

Reply:The positioner came from LWS, its only a month old.The welder is an invertec V350 pro with advanced panel.  (my baby)I don't know if he will be going to niagara orleans or Erie niagara.  The first one is just a few miles from my home.  He is going to be way ahead of everybody else there.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Good Job David! Nice to see dad spending quality time with son. Since he will be advanced in his class he may feel bored. Tell him to hang in there and maybe he can help out some of the other kids by sharing his advanced knowledge. "Every choice you make will effect at least one other person"

Reply:In highschool, I never even had the chance to take welding in shop class.Compared to a lot of high school programs, home schooling a trade on the side isn't a bad idea, especially if they express interest in it.  It gives them a head start if they decide to stick with it.  Your son's welds are pretty good, tell him to keep it up!  When I took my first year welding course, the first month was all oxy/acet. welding and maybe a week or two of brazing.  It made for looooong days, lol.  After that it was a few months of stick, and a few months of mig.Last edited by mb_welder; 04-15-2008 at 07:02 AM.
Reply:I took "metal shop" in high school.  Never picked up a stinger.  I did a little brazing, but that is all.  In college I took one semester of welding.  We had a great teacher, an old guy that told a lot of stories, but I learned  a LOT of things.  I went to college for auto tech, but took one semester of machine shop, one of welding and one of body shop.  It all fits in with my business now.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:my daughter started stick training at 8, when i had to go in to the shop to supervise on the weekends.
