Under AWS D1.1, what is the maximum size allowable for a star or crater crack at the termination of a weld?Regards,Jellopool
Reply:Its a defect that needs to be fixed or will become worst.
Reply:So, are you saying that there shall be no maximum allowable size for star and crater cracks?  In other words, star and crater cracks are unacceptable under all circumstances at the termination of a weld?
Reply:I don't have my CWI card, so I won't swear to it in court.  But I believe that any crack that's visible to the naked eye would be cause to reject a weld based on visual inspection criteria in AWS D1.1.  So, my opinion is that 'star' or 'crater' cracks, which can be seen with the naked eye, are unnacceptable under any circumstances.  Perhaps one of the CWI's who follow the forum can confirm this? Reply:Thank you for your response!  I don't know if it makes any difference, but I was wondering if these cracks had any acceptance criteria when Mag Particle or Liquid Penetrant testing.  My gut feeling is shared with you- if you can see the crack it should be considered a relevant indication and rejectable defect.  I just cant find a paragraph in the code that addresses this.
Reply:I think the first section of table 6.1 makes it very clear. "Any crack shall be unacceptable, regardless of size or location."Have we all gone mad?
