A widow lady gave me a tall compressed gas bottle, Her late husband worked at a hospital.  The bottle is painted gold.  What kind of gas?
Reply:You DO NOT assume type of gas by the color of the cylinder. Because you're asking I will assume you've checked and didn't find a sticker.?.?.?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:A picture would help. I agree never assume the gas within the tank. Was he a welder? Could it be oxygen since it was a hospital? Welding with oxygen could be explosive. Make sure your positive what gas is in that cylinder before doing anything with it.Color does not mean much as said above. I have seen oxygen bottles black and shorter tanks which were also black that looked similar that were acetylene.Google came up with many gold colored cylinders... oxygen, argon, nitrogen, helium   were just a few.Last edited by oxygen454; 02-13-2011 at 04:32 AM.
Reply:What kind of valve does it have?  Does it have a company name on it?  I would check with a medical gas supply company and see what they say.
Reply:Around here it seems the gas suppliers paint their bottles any color they want.If their is a ring around the neck with a manufacture's or supplier's name, you probably have rental bottle (in otherwords they guy 'borrowed' it from the hospital).  Maybe the gas rental place will give you some credit if you return it.If not, take it to a gas supplier and trade it for whatever you do need.  Let them worry about what is in the bottle.Con Fuse!Miller Dynasty 350Millermatic 350P-Spoolmatic 30AMiller Multimatic 200Hypertherm PowerMax 1000G3Miller Maxstar 200DX
Reply:To answer your question better, it could have been used either for patients, or with equipment like gas chromatographs or it might even have come from somewhere else and be something exotic (although less likely). You didn't say whether you have a regulator which fits it; the type of connection (CGA designation, eg 580 for inert gases) would give you an idea, and that can be determined by just looking at the outlet and matching the thread size and 'hand', the general shape, etc. to the standards.Does the tank contain any pressure? If so, there are a few tests which could be done on some of the gas, assuming the gas isn't highly corrosive or toxic.Possible gases include oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon, helium, nitrous oxide, perhaps even a Freon...I've probably forgotten some others.
Reply:Take it to a gas supplier.Never assume anything. Anything is possible. It could be a gas mix. Many gases are odorless and colorless. DO NOT USE A MATCH to check!!!!One time I was given a pile of stainless welding TIG filler wires. Some marked, most were not. Different types all mixed together in a pile.I had to throw away all of the unmarked filler wires because some had been used on the tagged end first! At least $100.00 of wasted filler wires.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 02-14-2011 at 04:37 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:Maybe he welded and blew himself up? Hasn't been on since... I hope not. lol
