Just got a mig welder and would like build a small (maybe 3'x4') welding "booth" to contain the sparks. I have the welding table but would like some ideas on how to build a booth. Would setting up a welding blanket be a good method? Will be doing just small stuff around the house. Thanks
Reply:Myself, I don't use one. But if I were to, I wouldn't have a permanent one. An articulated frame that sits on the floor would be good. 3-4 panels. Can be plywood( best if painted dark color so not to reflect light), welding blanket, or something like roof tin. This way you can move it around to adapt to the task at hand.Just my nickles worth........200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:I use a 2 by 4 foot metal table, sheet metal with 1 inch sq tubing frame, with folding metal sawhorses, takes up minimal space.   I move it outside if I do much stick welding, inside for MIG and TIG.  I also have a little folding shield, one foot high, that covers the back and the sides, which I mostly use outside to protect the neighbors from seeing the arc.  The shield attaches to the table with the welding magnets.Think noncombustable sides and back to contain sparks.A more serious booth would have ventilation, and an exhaust fan.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:I'm a hobbyist, too.  I put a fold-down table along one wall of my garage.  I store clamps behind it.  When I'm not welding, I can park my car there.I also have a ventilation fan up above it, and there's aluminum flashing (painted to match the wall) all around it.  Ignore the table to the right.  It's for cutting long lengths of steel and also for wood projects.Jack OlsenMy garage website

Reply:Desk style bench, entire unit is vented. aluminum plate on top.((  homemade toolbox . ))next to it (which i couldnt take a photo due to gov. work) is just a steel bench which i of course do all my heavy banging on that.(non-important details lol )The face you see is made out of  tinfoil. its my pride and joy since it scares away the tool thieves.. i hope.  Attached Images
