i have a new Lincoln 135 and the wire keeps burning back to the tip clogging the tip and stopping the wire feed. i increased the wire speed,increased the arc length but still having problems. also what's the best way to unclog those contact tips so i can use them over?thanks ant
Reply:If you REALLY melt the wire into the tips, they are generally toast.  If you just get a wad in the very end, you can usually grab the wad with a pair of needlenose pliers and break it loose, but if this happens too many times the effect is pretty much the same.  Tips are cheap in volume.  Buy a bunch and you will not feel bad about changing them when things arent working.Try turning the heat down or maybe run thicker wire.  You dont have the specs on what you are running at, but i am guessing the wire is pretty thin (.023) and you are running at a high temp setting.  Give us a bit more detail about your setup, metal you are welding, wire, and conditions.  Is it a continuous problem or intermittent?Last edited by smithboy; 09-29-2005 at 09:48 AM.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.

Just getting the tip closer to the weld fixed it for me. My welding book said 1/4 to 1/2 inch wire stick out, and unknowingly, I was at probably an inch.-Dallas J
