Been back on welding now for about six months after a very long (18 year-ish) layoff. I've been using "unbranded" 6013 rods from the local farm store (I'm cheap - I admit it!), and having a host of problems.I put it down to me, the layoff, poor technique, remembering I was better than I really was, anything *EXCEPT* those electrodes (I never like to blame the tool, not until I've put the workman through the wringer!)Finally bit the bullet and bought some "real" electrodes (won't mention the brand, don't want this to sound like a testimonial), but...Revelation! Suddenly, everything goes right, more or less without thinking about it!I suppose the morals are this:A bad workman will blame his tools, but there are limits to what anyone can put up with, andThere are some tools *NO ONE* should be lumbered with!As they say on exam papers, discuss...
