I have a cast brass set of windahield posts for a kit car I am building. These are raw castings that need to be finished and smooth before they can be plated. There are several flaws that need to be filled.I have been told to use hard silver braze on this.I have never used this material before and need to know all information on preping the casting and how to apply the hard siver braze. Also where to get it.Would local welding suppy have this or would it be a special order item? Thanks for your help.Best regards,Grandpa Marc
Reply:If you use silver braze, the color match will be difficult.  You might do better with regular Oxyfuel and coated brazing rods
Reply:what kind of plating are you going to use?
Reply:The windshield posts will be chrome plated.I thought I could just use regular brass rod to fill but was advised to use hard silver braze.Best regards,Grandpa Marc in N.C.originaly from liberty New York
Reply:would use Oxy-actylene with brass filler.Or if you can, use TIG with silicon bronze filler. But not silver.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:They're probably talking about sil-flo (the stuff HVAC guys use to braze AC stuff). It melts at a lower temp than brass so you're less likely to damage a small casting.Local welding suppliers carry it. The plating solution doesn't care about what the material is only if it's the anode or cathode. If your worried about it, take it to a jeweler, they work cheap on small stuff (at least around here they do).Matt
