I want to teach myself how to tig titanium but I know I need a trailing cup and a back purge to reach the minimal requirements for shielding gas but have you seen the prices on these things?!? As someone who has just begun to get their career going I can't afford to spend $300-900 on a trailing cup! Any iras on how to get the appropriate gas coverage alot cheaper?
Reply:How big are the parts? Will they fit in a turkey pan? Argon is heavier than air, fill up the pan with argon, & go at it.If too big, build a tent for the parts with a trash bag.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Thanks and they are small scraps I'm getting from a friend so that turkey pan thing might be the ticket
Reply:IF it is round tubing being welded the gas will flow around the round tubing very well.Use a gas lens on the torch. for better gas coverage. You can make a plexiglass box with VENTS. Hand holes on each side. wrap foam around your cuffs of your welding gloves. If the weld turns any colors on the titanium it is contaminated. Must be chrome looking.A seperate purge line will help. Just a couple pounds pressure.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 02-10-2011 at 01:40 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
