I just got a PM from out of the country asking me about what kind of gas to use.  I didn't reply because I'm not that literate computerly to be sure it's safe and I'm only aware of one trick way to mig galvanized. The only specialized stuff I know for galvanized is using pure Argon with silicon bronze wire.Anyone else got any input on this?life is good
Reply:To do any welding on galvanized, you must first remove the coating so that no dangerous fumes are created. These fumes are very toxic and should not be inhaled. Remove them with steel wool, sandpaper, grinder, whatever, but wear protection as to not inhale the dust, then weld as if it were any other mild steel.
Reply:Yup, but ditto on the cleaning and ventallation!Owner of Welding Wiki,The free wiki based resource for weldor's around the world.http://www.weldingwiki.comWe have cookies!
Reply:Harv,I worked in a shop that did this galv crap with mig when I was a pup.  I regret doing it, screwed my lungs up even with ventalation and respirators.  The respirartrs were later deemed not OSHA accepted for our levels of fume.  Howeveer, the question ws the wire.  ER70S-6 was used.  Worked fine.  .035" wire or smaller, as usually the galv as you know is thin.   We did it on EMT.   After welding,  clean off the white stuff,  paint it with aluminum colored paint and away you go.IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:welding on galv is bad news i made my self very sick for a week wen i was 19 doing a favor for a friend by welding on that stuffChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:me to.  Been there...done that...Makes you feel like crap, and that's only after about 30 minutes in the fumes.Fluxcore+cross wind helps, but a better solution is to have someone do it who doesnt need to breathe.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:lol...now adays i stick to 6010 for doing that sorta thing.  something i learned from harv was to use 6010 gray for these jobs.  Works for me    oh yeah,  i like a fan tooIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:If you look at my work at all you'll notice I do a lot of welding of galvanized.  I've only been doing since about 1975 and I'll bet at least half of the stuff I've welded up with fencing has been galvanized.I've never used a respirator except when I sand blast.  I finally had to break down and wear a mask when working with some woods.  They can be tough on you too.I've only been galvanized sick a half dozen times in the last thirty years.  The way it effects me is I feel like I've got a body flu from hell for about thirty minutes to an hour.  Then I'm fine.  The worst I've ever had it might have lasted two hours. But I've had people around me get almost violently ill from the fumes and be down for a week or more.I do know that it's zinc poisoning which isn't like lead poisoning.  Strong milk will help if you're around it.  I've heard of weldors drinking pure half and half when welding galvanized.I do have to mention that I weld outside almost all the time.  If I'm welding galvanized inside I'm using a fan and I prefer stick.  As pointed out my rod of choice is 5P+ for just about everything. This topic came up because I got a private message from out of the country.  I really didn't want to reply because of the threats of viruses and such.  So I thought that since the question came up through here the best way to handle it was to go public with it in open discussion. As it's been explained to me using the silicon bronze wire with argon on galvanized cuts back on the fumes and the distortion.  Supposedly the silicon bronze wire melts at a lower temperature and the weld is more of brazing than a weld.Of course the problem is the silicon bronze wire is about five plus times the cost of mild steel wire and argon isn't cheap either.life is good
Reply:Harv,  yeah I was intrested in part to your post because of the idea of using silicon bronze.  Dont get me wrong,  I agree and Ive used silicon bronze.  But Ive only heard of it wiht cut length,  aka tig.  So this is new to me and for this thank you for offering yet another notch in my belt.  I will have to look into this silicon bronze wire.  From my experience with tig though, its true what you said.  The silicon bronze is a brazing rod basically.  Very strong nonetheless.  BUt it limits, based on the weldor, the amount of heat in the parent metal, therefore the amount of zinc that gets burned out...the less zinc burning out the less fumes, the less fumes the happier you are.  Ive read a lot of your stuff Harv.  I like your work.  Wouldnt always do it the same way, but I do think its done very professionally and I do read up to see what youve done lately or most recently and I do find it quite interesting.  Ive learned a lot from just seeing what you do and how you do it.  I personally dont do well with the galv.  I still do it when I have to,  but only with stick now and outside.   It makes it a lot easier that way.  I know were actually real close, though Ive not met your aquantainance perhaps one day our paths will cross.   Wishin ya a happy New Year and many more to come.IF it Catches...Let it Burn
