All though this is a year or so in the future, I want to buy a TIG /stick welder, and price is definitely an issue. I just want to know what The Dynasty has that the Syncrowave doesn't. i read the miller site specs and see it has allot of features, but as long as I can weld up to1/4inch steel and aluminum, I'm happy. I am a beginner, but am very creative and am always working on projects, most of which are half done due to the lack of a welder so I will definitely be using the welder on at least a weekly basis, and want a machine that can roll with the punches. Are there any other less expensive welders that can do TIG and stick up to 1/4 steel and aluminum? Thanks,Eric

Reply:Look for a used Synchrowave 180 or 200, TIG and Stick, AC and DC, High frequency, will weld almost any metal, including aluminum.   You can stick weld 1/4 inch steel plate or much thicker.  Very flexible, as you can TIG thin metal and stick thicker steel.   Used 180s or 200s are in the range of $1200, plus or minus, including cables, foot pedal, and regulator.  All you need to get then is an Argon bottle and some rod.  I have owned both a 180 and a 200, very different, but both very good.   The 180 may be better for the beginner, very simple controls.  The 200 has pulse, lots of controls, which could be advantageous for thin aluminum. To TIG aluminum, you need AC and high frequency, which the Syncrowaves and Dynastys have.     Note that a 200 amp class machine will probably max out on TIG at 3/16 inch thick.  Stick welding aluminum is not recommended.Unless you need portability, I think that it is hard to justify the extra cost for the Dynasty, especially if you are having to save up the money.  Buy a used Syncrowave, and you can sell it later for roughly what you paid for it, and buy a Dynasty when you get rich. The Syncrowave 250 is nice, but bigger, heavier, and costs more.RichardLast edited by raferguson; 03-03-2011 at 04:28 PM.Sculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:My experience has shown me that the Dynasty needs less input power, than either of the syncros. This might play a big roll in what machine will actually work in your situation. Home garage might not have the power to make full use of the syncros.
Reply:Good point on power.   The Synchrowaves need a 50 amp 220V circuit.   I had my syncrowaves on that circuit, never blew a breaker.  I run my compressor and plasma cutter and MIG on the same circuit, but not all at the same time.  The Dynasty draws about 20 amps on 220V.  I forgot that the Dynasty will run on 120V, but only at very limited power on a 20 amp 120V circuit.50 amps 220V is a good number anyway, will run 95% of home shop welders.  If you have to pull a new 220V circuit anyway, just go ahead and run 6ga wires and put in a 50 amp circuit.   The labor is the same.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge

Reply:i bought my 200dx for tig welding alum.it turned out to be the best the best stickwelder i ever use
Reply:Thanks guys!I am getting certified eventually and have only learned oxy and tig but after my spring break I will be learning mig, and then stick nest semester. I know about AC for and HF for aluminum, and so on.  I am probably going to get a snycrowave 200. Price is better, and its still not to big that I cant move it in and out of the shop. I have a woodshop, and I'mpretty sure I have a 220v wall plug in there for the table saw, so I can run a chord out the window when I weld, as I will not weld in the shop. (disaster waiting to happen). I might get a small mig eventually to, but I don't know.Thank you all for your input and have a great spring.
Reply:Just remember that you can't TIG out of doors if the wind is blowing.   Stick outside is no problem.  I try to stick outside and TIG and MIG inside.  Stick generates a lot of sparks, happier to keep that hazard in the driveway.   I have a folding shield so passerby do not see the arc.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
