Hi All!Great bunch of people on here! I purchased a Precision Tig 185 a year ago, since, I have been successful in welding m.s., aluminum, and stainless when it is on the welding table. I have certification in 3G stick,6010 & 7018.  However when I have to tig at knee level or a little lower, my foot control is something to be desired. When I tig on or near the floor, I lay down and run the foot control between my knees with great results. Any tips on those "bad" heights without hand controls? Or What desent hand controls are available? ThanksNDAV8R
Reply:I usually dont use any amp controls when I tig.  I just have to set the controls for the "average heat" I need.  I also tend to weld from the edges inward to prevent the nice hole at the edges, but, it reduces or eliminates the need for a pedal as long as you get the amps right to start with.>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<   This is kinda what i am talking about.      weld direction. It's not perfect, but....as for out of position welds with tig...I try not to have any, but when it is absolutely necessary (and it almost never is) I dont do anything different.  I have used a foot pedal and they are really handy (so to speak), but when you can vary the amps so easily, I think you tend not to think so much about the "best amp setting" for the material.  Kinda like straight shift verses automatic.  If you start on an automatic, you dont think about which gear is best for crusing 40 mph, you just press the gas till you see 40 mph and hold it there.  With a 5-speed, you might want 3rd.  The analogy isnt perfect, but you get the idea.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:never heard about not using pure on an inverter though

Reply:Just set the heat and go!  The only time I use a control is on ali.   Remember to have the wire inside at the bottom and just out at the top (on carbon) I weld at somewhere around 120-135 amps from 3" pipe up and you'll be away!Stephen
Reply:I have welded in all sorts of positions with tig, I have put the foot pedal between my legs, ran it with my knee, laying on belly running it with tip of toe, even ran it with my a$$ one time. when you are welding thin guage you really need a foot pedal, or the heat control on the torch ( I hate those). Just takes a little practice and patience
Reply:I do a lot of out of position TIG in al and steel. Believe me, it is worth the money to go ahead and purchase a hand control to augment your foot pedal! I personally don't like to attach the hand control to the torch. I hold it in my hand that feeds the rod. Much easier to control. I find it difficult to work the hand control and control the torch at the same time.
Reply:You asked something about a desent hand controller, i'm guessing you mean decent, and Lincoln makes one for that machine.  http://www.mylincolnelectric.com/Cat...et.asp?p=18688
Reply:i have some kneepads like carpenters usei kneel on the floor  and use my other knee to operate the pedal..my back dont care for it but i get-er-done ...zap!
